    Default Geri Allen passes

Jazz pianist and native Detroiter has passed from this earth at the too-young age of 60. Here's a nice article from NY Times:

Tragic and very sad. And it comes just at a point where her significant contribution to the recent history of the music was starting to be recognized.

Here is a good personal overview from fellow pianist Ethan Iverson:

My cousin want to Cass with her, and was in music and theater arts there. A few years later he told me that I had to check out this girl he knew from school who was gigging with Marcus Belgrave and making a big splash. Even then she was spectacular, with style that intriguingly mixed together a number of streams in jazz.

A few years later I was able to catch her playing in Tokyo when I lived there. At that time I had a few minutes to talk to her and found her soft-spoken, but witty, engaging, and deeply informed and opinionated about music history.

She will be very much missed.
