Default Greektown, get it together. WTF.

3 shot in Greektown outside of party bus

What's it going to take for Greektown to become as safe as Campus Martius? This is unacceptable.

This is so out of order! I'm pretty dog-gone hearty to city life but simply REFUSE to do Greektown at this point. Considering you'd think the crime would be down to a roar as IT IS 'downtown'...... Instead throngs of rowdy cursing folk and the potential for this. Uh, no thank you.

Umm.... someone needs a geography lesson [[Detroit News).... that is NOT Greektown.... that's the border between Bricktown and the BCBS Campus. The main Greektown street is 3 blocks to the north!!

This site is closer to Jefferson than it is to Greektown.

I will not be afraid to go to Greektown....

Furthermore, it's completely unrealistic to not expect ANY crime to happen downtown.

Detroit statistically still has one of the safest CBDs in the country. Let's keep that in mind.

I did peep the distance, but I was thinking about the area in general.

I believe the best days of GT are gone. I am not feeling it, not so much out of 'fear' but simply not wanting the hassle of that particular area, or having to witness folks going wrong. The best food is gone and so is the original feel of the venue. And I don't gamble, soooooo.....

I get that. And I do Riverwalk alot. You cannot walk about in a state of fear, but I'm more choosy about where I eat these day and don't want rude crowds.

It has seemed liked much of the authentic greek feel has been loss, and more chains restaurants have came in.

In addition, over the last year or two, it seems the classiness of the Greektown crowds has gone downhill as well. Don't know if there is a correlation there, but sure seems like it.

It's now our tourist trap. I'm sure when Las Vegas was just starting out it was full of glitz and glamour but now it's accessible to everyone and it's drunk bros on a bachelor party, fat Americans and Eurotrash tourists, and freaks [[not trying to be derogatory but that's what I've heard).

The crime in Gilberttown Detroit is not going to stop people from working, shopping and doing fun stuff. There's always going to be crime in Detroit. No one can not stop it, but deter it.

bring out the green light cameras!!!

I read the DetNews link provided, but was there any motive for the shooting? It seems random and unprovoked so far, but only if the parties did not know each other.

I'm not condoning what this guy did by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a party bus. Two things I've learned about alcohol, it makes you timid and it makes you smart. I'm betting there was some kind of exchange before this guy showed everyone how he was brought up.

Greektown was finished when the casino opened. That was a really bad public policy decision.

They should just name that now-horrific block something else. Or just have Gilbert auction off the rights or something.

While the area has evolved quite a bit, bear in mind it was virtually dead [[like the rest of downtown) back in the late 90s before the casino opened.

Frankly, the casino was the best thing to happen to it. It acts as an anchor for the other businesses that still thrive there.

The privately owned businesses obviously have a vested interest in keeping their area safe and clean. Otherwise potential patrons - many being out-of-towners - will steer clear of Greektown. With all due respect to the over-stretched or under-manned DPD, security-conscious Greektown business owners can do much for the area if they keep safety and security a priority.

I don't remember it ever being "dead". Greektown was packed in the 90's, when I would go to Hellas or Pegasus with my parents. I remember waiting out on the street on long lines, and the streets being jammed. And Golden Fleece, an occasional weekday lunch with my dad, would be very crowded with the downtown worker bees.

Now Hellas is a vacant lot and Pegasus is basically a bad casino restaurant. The Greek coffeehouse is gone, so is the Greek bakery. And those stupid casino skywalks cover the street; God forbid people actually walk on the street.

I mean before Trappers Alley and the tourist trap it is today, Greektown was full of illegal gambling joints and speakeasies. The casino there is just a legal homage to its once shady past.

Heh, heh! This [[very) old timer remembers being sent in to the Greecian Gardens to watch for a barbut game in the back. I must have worn my badge on my hat because I never saw one. But they were always going. First time in [[plain clothes) I sat at a table and asked for a coffee. The waiter said, "How about dinner, officer, it's on the house?" Circa 1961. Sure, I had the friggin' dinner. Sue me.

Don't know, never had a hint problem there. Never was a witness to anything other then an aggressive panhandler. Saw some drunks sometimes I guess.
