Thread: Big Book Store

  1. #1

    Default Big Book Store

Located on Cass facing Antoinette St. Hodgepodge of paperbacks, vintage porn, magazines with a smattering of comic books and records. I get a kick out of, and enjoy conversating with the dirty vulgar old hippy that works there full time.He was on the Detroit hippy underground scene of the early 70's. The store isnt as organized as John King, but its possible to find a treasure. I picked up a second printing of Daddy Was A Numbers Runner, there are some other cool pulp paperbacks behind the counter. Ever stopped by the place?

I think they make most of their money on the skin mags. The other stuff is sorta disorganized. When I used to go there, the guy who worked there was a hoot.

I thought this store was owned by or somehow affiliated with John King.

They always refer folks who are looking for aged periodicals to that location. You may find an old GQ magazine or Tank Girl comic book there.

My uncle[[in law) Norman Wexler owned the original Big Book Store and sold it when he moved to San Fransisco in the 70's. He was friends with John King

Well, be he truly a distant relative, then I sincerely apologize for any careless and judgmental references I made to him being an "amped-up loonie" who did "horrible things" to folks [[as Bob Zmuda supposedly painted him out to be in the Kaufman book) on another thread about urban legends.

Lots of comics. None of them in super shape, but yes, very cheap. There's also a hole-in-wall magazine/book/comic store on Mack Ave. somewhere [[may have to drive up and down).
