Default Warren Evans' wife gets Wayne County job, promotion

"Take Renata Seals: she was hired last year in the Wayne County Treasurer’s office at $60,000 a year, despite no prior government experience, or even a college degree. A few months later, when a new treasurer took over, Seals got a promotion: going from a contract employee, to full-time with benefits and a $10,000 bump in pay.

Seals isn’t the only person in her family drawing a county paycheck: no, her husband gets one too. He happens to run the county, and his name is Warren Evans."

And his jail site sits empty and costs the county $43K per day.

    Oh well. Must be nice.
Somebody steer me toward one of these good jobs. I'm struggling in comparison.

If Warren Evans has/had anything to do with her employment and promotion, it should be investigated for possible wrongdoing. I know nothing about the job she has or the qualifications for it. But at the very least it looks terrible. I will note that a college degree or prior government experience are not required for many positions. If she had a private sector job with similar skills and expertise needed, there is no reason she should be disqualified because of her husband's job. But they need to make sure that it was a competitive job search, he didn't influence anyone to hire her, and that they were completely open and upfront about her hiring and their marriage.

    This sucks.

It makes you wonder how hard Gilbert and Gores are getting squeezed in their attempt to bring MLS to Detroit when they need Warren Evans on board...

Annoyingly so! Can't we have a departure of this narrative?

Long ago, we Detroiters collectively agreed that jobs were not for getting the business of the City done -- but were necessary to right the wrongs of the past. We called this justice 'affirmative action'. It has mutated.

Logically related: an interesting discussion of how we have created new evil concepts, see Rex Murphy in Canada's National Post on 'social justice'.

This [[nepotism) isn't hardly unique to Detroit or the Public Sector.

BTW, Wayne County does not equal Detroit.

Good post, and that's the thing. Was this actually impropriety, did it just look like impropriety, or is this a new slick way for media to boost it's ratings by posting sensational stories on websites?

Pure speculation, but my guess is that she demanded different treatment and took liberties, pissed off a few people, and those people brought it to the attention of the media. Perhaps some hardworking folks that wouldn't have minded a raise or made less money for doing more work.
