Default Coming to LCA the Frozen Four[[?)

There had been discussion about bids for NCAA events for the new LCA.

2018 first round NCAA men's basketball tourney games.

    2018 Horizon League basketball Tourney.

Now apparently the 2019 'Frozen Four' NCAA hockey tourney.

I still believe Detroit is as good a sports city as one will find.

This is always a great event. Even though there are only 4 teams participating, people from all over the country attend the event. I have been to 7 of them myself.

There are 60 Division I college hockey teams and it is not uncommon to see fans wearing the gear of all of these teams at the Frozen Four. Why is this important? Because that is money from many places coming in, and [[hopefully) positive stories of the visitor experience to our city going back to 60 communities.

With a brand new arena and Michigan being a hockey hotbed, I would anticipate Detroit entering the regular or semi regular rotation for the Frozen Four along with Minneapolis, Tampa, and a handful of others.

The formal announcement for this is scheduled to be Tuesday, April 18. It will be interesting to see if the Boston Globe report is true, and if in fact LCA gets the 2019 Frozen Four as announced.

It should also be noted that on April 18, the NCAA was scheduled to make the announcements for several other NCAA sports championships that Detroit area facilities have bid for, including wrestling at LCA, basketball first and second rounds, and Divison 2/3 football championships at Ford Field.

With the whole North Carolina HB2 drama, it is possible this announcement could get pushed back. But if it does get announced, it will be interesting to see how many other NCAA championship events the area gets awarded.

update: announcement will occur on 4/18 as planned.

Turns out it is the 2020 Frozen Four coming to LCA. [[2019 is going to Buffalo). Also, LCA won a bid to host the 2021 MBB 1&2 rounds, and 2022 Wrestling championship.

From the business side, I actually think hosting the 1&2 rounds is better than the regional for MBB. While the regional is more prestigious, the 1&2 rounds bring more business to town as there are 8 teams and fan bases as opposed to four. Also, the 1&2 rounds get more TV watching as many people tune out once their bracket is busted or their team eliminated. But the biggest thing is still having 8 teams staying in the city, which is that many more hotel rooms occupied and that many more opportunities to expose the city's improvements to more people.

    Great, great start for LCA.

Heard a brief interview on TV with Tom Wilson. Sounds like the deadline to finish LCA is very tight.
