Is it just me, or does it seem like local Newscasts are sometimes out of touch?

Did anyone notice the other morning when on the local news on the channel that rhymes with "box" there was an interview with the two main stars of a new TV show called "APB". The female actress told the interviewer that she misses Detroit and the interviewer asked her if she was from here and the actress replied that "she worked on a project here". The interviewer didn't seem to have a clue that she was one of the actors from Detroit 187!? It's not uncommon for them to misidentify which side of town a story is on, or mispronounce a street name, etc., but who's responsibility is it to research or correct a mistake when it comes to "local" reporting? You would think they would hire local consultants to minimize this from happening?

News stations run on a mix of starry-eyed anchors who travel between markets until they get to the biggest market they can land, and Specs Howard grads who are not paid strikingly well. So, I think we get what we pay for.

Channel 4 is notorious for this.

Also, you can say Fox 2 Detroit. Calling out stations is just fine.

Detroit's not alone. My adopted home of Las Vegas has the same newscast problems. Just last night I noted one talking head speaking of a bus accident which occurred on Sunset at Warm Springs.

They run parallel a mile apart. Dah.

To be fair, I'd say most would be hard-pressed to recognize an actor/actress for their role in Detroit 187. Did that show even last a full season?

First of all, asking of this matter on DY is odd, seeing as folks here seem to have little regard to [[or some long-distance living situation that promotes no incentive to-) watch the local news or make the necessary links to local stories. At least, not like they used to...

This may be-on the surface-due to the fact that most of our local news sources are not that reliable. Many of them lost credibility by constant fear-mongering or disproportionately reporting crime as it applies to [[black) city crime VS. the oft overlooked [[white) suburban crime. That and the classic tactic of "sticking a microphone in the face of someone who has just undergone a loss or tragedy" has earned the media lost of distrust from a more sensible public.

Foxnews, itself, lost a large portion of a promising generation back in the late 90's when it is was on a crusading spree to shamelessly slander the techno scene in the most profoundly ridiculous ways. Even those not affiliated with the Techno scene saw how laughable their "Crave the Rave" broadcasts were.

I eventually learned, that there are other forum sites that are better at looking at local news and current events than DY.

Folks on DY tend to focus on development, infrastructure, investments news, etc.-one would think that a majority of them were out-of-state investor/developers just astroturfing here with no genuine interest in the Detroit community at large as far as culture or current events would apply.

More like lazy. Local TV news is mostly police blotter stuff – rapes, murders, fires, robberies and freeway smash-ups, with a few minutes of sports and weather thrown in.

Spelling and grammar are usually learned starting in elementary school.

Indeed and there's a lot more to learn when it comes to journalism school, like AP Style, how to structure a story and what not.

Very true. But when a well structured story is presented with bad grammar and misspelled captions in the pictures, it comes off like it was done by a 6th grader. With the expensive equipment that a station has, spell check is not available ?

It happens a lot and unfortunately way too often. That's what happens when budgets are cut, staff members are laid off and less editors are there to edit the copy.
