Regardless of numbers, it doesn't change the fact that America is a secular nation. Period.

Any imposition of belief in fairy tales or superstition on the national agenda is illegal.

Maybe as a society its time to look at marriage as one of our social institutions that isn't serving us as well as it should and changes should be made.

You can make a case that since half of all marriages end in divorce, that either marriages should be easier to get out of or harder to get in to.

Given our increased life spans, economic equality [[in some cases superiority) of women, having children because you want them, rather than needing them and other realities of the 21st century maybe the need for the type of marriage we have now doesn't exist any longer.

Depending on the studies you read the number of men and now women having affairs is off the charts.

To marry just because of romantic love, while it sounds nice doesn't hold up for many marriages especially since people are living into their 70's, 80's and 90's.

What you thought was crazy good in your 20's is just now crazy in your 60's. Peoples taste in everything changes over time and unfortunately that includes spouses as well.

Repairing a marriage after an affair ? yes you can, but the affair is a symptom of a far greater problem.

Of course now I'm going to hear about all the long term marriages and how great they are but, in looking at statistics its those exceptions that prove the rule.

However, for you personally, could you recover from an affair like the one Sanford had. Not a drunken grope gone hyper-drive at the company xmas party. A real love/lust affair.

You proved my point. The people who wrote different books in the bible had a feeling or emotion that inspired them to write about different subjects. God didn't tell them what to write.

In a few cases, I think it can be. People make mistakes. Now if the affair was some long drawn out relationship, then no, but if a man or woman makes a bad choice and cheats and regrets it, things can be mended. I'm sure some of you out there may have cheated and after wonder what have you done.

80% of people may or may not believe in something supernatural, that isn't the point, or the correct figure. Religion is on the wane in western societies, and again, Europe is ahead of the curve.

Only in the middle east, and here in America do you see the dogmatic self-righteousness of people of "faith".

You don't have mega-churches in other nations like you do here. It's a big business run by charlatans, and is about selling phony salvation to ignorant people. It's a failure of our ability to educate people, and stop indoctrinating them from a young age to believe in superstitions.

But to the point that it influences our public policy, this is where the "believers" need to take a step back, and remember that we are a secular society, and have separation of church and state, and never shall they meet. My lack of belief sets me up as a target for discrimination by those who are dogmatic in their faith. I'm called "godless" "a devil worshipper" "socialist, communist," yaddda, yadda, yadda.

The "faithful" even destest each other- Lutherans against Catholics, against Pentacostals, Methodist- everyone needs their own clubhouse and reason to hate or distrust each other.

Any intelligent, thinking person faced with this reality won't touch religion with a barge pole.
