Star Deli is my tops for bread and meat quality. 12& Telegraph.
Uncle Harry's on Mack between 8&9 is good too.
Bread Basket gets an honorable mention as well.
    All subjective as tastes vary!

Thanks. My partner is vegetarian. I am a carnivore three times a week. Never been to Star. All of the others are good suggestions. Perhaps there is an unsung local bar or diner that has not been mentioned?

Ten years ago Eph McNally's would win hands down. Today I would go with Louie's near Eastern Market.

OP asked about in the city. Never been to Louie's but I do want to try it., Hygrade is good. Outside the city limits Stage on Orchard Lake is really good, Star is really good. Original Bread Basket on Greenfield is really good.

Martins Coney Island on 10 Mile near Lasher across from Southfield High has great Rubens. [[actually, all their food is good) Don't laugh its the truth. Don't knock it till you try it.

House of Reuben on 8 Mile near Gratiot.

Downtown proper is Gateway Deli on Fort Street [[which also has other Jewish deli items such as matzo ball soup and latkes). Right outside of downtown is Hygrade, comparable to Gateway on corned beef but lacking in other deli products. Breadbasket chain does a nice job. In the NW suburbs, best are Star [[carry out only), Plaza and Pickles and Rye. Stage also is fine, but a bit pricey and pretentious for me.

IMO the best corned beef sandwich place was Esquire's on Dexter. But that was in the 60's. I don't know if it's still in existence. There was also a place in the old Broadway market but again that was in the 60's. I think they left when the market moved in the new building on the other side of Broadway.

Louie's at Eastern Mrkt or downtown - Wigley's corned beef. Mudgies is also very good and Vivio's at Eastern Market is pretty good.

The Bronx Deli, although they aren't in Detroit, one of the best corned beef sandwiches I've had. They are located in Pontiac and Farmington Hills. Especially when you have them grilled.

Bode's in Plymouth. Hang on to your seat if a train comes by!
New York Deli on Farmington and 5 mile.

Motor City Casino back when their deli was in the basement had the best grilled CB on rye in the city, IMHO. Not as good now.

Super greasy, but really good. My only complaint there was the lack of spicy mustard or horseradish.

Have not been there in a couple years. All this gentrification stuff and Q1 construction has been keeping me away. Good suggestion, will soon check back in for a sandwich. My dad worked for Grand Trunk Railroad.

Ditto that Ray. Whenever I was working in the downtown area, I always went there.
