There were literally dozens of record labels run out of Detroit during the heyday of soul in the 1960s. Motown was by far the largest and most historically important, but they were hardly the only game in town. And other Detroit labels did have hits too [[albeit mostly minor ones).

Wheelsville USA was one of the family of labels produced by D-Town records impresario Mike Hanks. Mike was in the music business from the late '50s until his tragic death in 1970. Mike was a tough, competitive guy who was resentful of Berry Gordy and had a couple of minor run-ins with him. He obviously named his labels in an attempt to sound like competition for Motown, but D-Town's output remained pretty small-time [[although some of those records sell for a pretty good amount of money now).

It says Hanks started Wheelsville in retaliation, after Berry Gordy blocked him from buying a house/recording studio a few doors away from Hitsville, USA.

Here are links to most of the Wheelsville singles. Mike Hank's Wheelsville/D-Town records mostly had a certain driving, drums-forward kind of sound that quite pleasing as dance/driving music and readily identifiable as Motown-influenced Detroit soul.
