Default Another Building Along Temple To Be Repurposed

The old 640 Temple building which has been offices for government is going to be re-purposed into residential.

The building is near the Masonic and Cass Park. Any building which is redeveloped in that area helps that important neighborhood. Good news, indeed.

There seems to be a good bit of real estate activity west of Cass.

    Crains has the story...

That would be the Standard Accident Insurance Company Building, built in 1920 by Albert Kahn.

HistoricDetroit.org has some small history on it.

Okay, with this in mind, where will birth and death records for the city of Detroit in particular be able to be purchased at? Already the shuttering of the Herman Kiefer complex left a lot of people without proper information as to where to go for that. For anyone of modest means who is driving there’s a degree of deep inconvenience when it comes to going to the CAY building downtown.

Some are only available in Lansing! What a drive indeed!

I'm going by some recollection, right or wrong, but I thought I read that the Ilitches, for reasons I don't know or understand, own the block west of that building.

That would be Temple, 3rd, 4th, going toward Charlotte.

But Temple from Woodward to the Lodge could redevelop over time. I'm sure the Ilitches would love to see that happen...

The new WSU school of business building would be a good first step.

    Building has good bones.

That is exactly the type of building which should be redeveloped or re-purposed [[and housing in that Cass area would seem an ideal purpose).

The 'secondary gain' is that all of the developmental activities on Temple [[e.g., WSU School of Business), streetscaping near the arena out toward Cass, this building, cleaning up Cass Park, and development of the parking lot opposite the Masonic, etc. might really encourage those owning the Alhambra Apt building and the Americana Hotel to redevelop them. 2020 sounds right for major development from Woodward/Temple to 640 Temple.

Sounds like old, but very good bones, indeed.

It is very likely. Even if there isn't any commercial development, which is certainly possible, you will get demand for residential construction there as Brush Park starts to fill up. I expect a lot of fill-in development in the area between the river, M-10, I-75/375, and Grand Boulevard over the next 10 years.
