    Default 60s Detroit Clubs

I am trying to find out where I saw some performers in the 60s in Detroit.

Some of the folks I saw were:
    Johnny Mathis
    Dinah Washington
    Nancy Wilson
    Ornette Coleman

Also, does anyone know the name[[s) of the coffee houses back then? They were also entertainment venues.

Poison Apple on East Jefferson near Coplin.

Chess Mate on Livernois and Alvin's on Cass were 2 coffee houses, also the Raven on Greenfield that later became Sweet Lorraines. The Elmwood in Windsor used to attract named entertainers.

Another place in Windsor that brought in a lot of big acts was the Top Hat. The Roostertail on the east side near Sindbad's also used to bring in a lot of top name acts back then.

Ornette Coleman, like a lot of jazz greats from that era, played at the Minor Key on Dexter. That's where my dad saw him soon after his big controversial run in NYC. Later on, in the early '70s, I know he played the Strata coffee house on Selden just off of Woodward, which also hosted a lot of big jazz names.

The Hideout on I-94 service drive south of 8 Mile. Saw Bob Seger, Rationals, Procol Harum, Scott Richard Case, Pleasure Seekers, and The Underdogs,[[ See link to some extra info.). Owned by Dave Leone and Punch Andrews. They owned other venues in Clawson and a ski lodge called Silver Bell that they used for a year or two. Not a lot of big names but a lot of fun.

The original Raven Gallery, before the Greenfield location, was in Birmingham near 15 and Woodward. Saw a young Ron Coden there, just out of the Army.

Thanks for that memory. Haven't thought of Ron Coden in AGES.

Saw the Blues Magoos at the tiny Chess Mate, early 1967 I think. They had to peel us all off the back wall when the show was over.

Ron Coden still plays - he's at O'Mara's in Berkley I believe the last Sat. of the month. Still puts on a great show. I first saw Ron at the Living End.

Ron Coden [[who used to Hot Fudge) used to play at the North Rosedale Park Activities Building way back and so did Josh White Jr. who will be playing in Ann Arbor the 10th.http://www.joshwhitejr.com/

I went to the Raven long ago when I was still dating my husband. They had an open mic night and Buffy Ste. Marie got up and performed.

I, too, was there. It was the loudest thing I ever heard. It is amazing that the band members have any sense of hearing left.

Yeah, so it's a chain that once held sway. I'm trusting this estate sale gem that turned up pertains to the East Jefferson location.

I still can't imagine what went on in the backrooms back in those days [[yet, the Ripoff Reports on some of the Hustler clubs make me snicker).
