I'm not a baseball fan but this is an uncharacteristically bold idea for Utica. I hope it all works out well for everyone!

Special events to be part of Jimmy John Field's opening

Fans will get their first look at the new $15 million Jimmy John Field minor league ballpark in Utica when the United Shore Professional League officially opens the facility on Memorial Day with special activities.

The Utica Unicorns will face the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers in the USPBL opener at 2 p.m. Monday before a sold-out crowd. The minor league teams’ rosters will be made up primarily of top-level college players from around the country.

Andy Appleby, the chairman and CEO of General Sports, which built the 4,000-seat ballpark, has gone all out for the big day with a variety of activities....

The Jimmy John Field includes five penthouse suites, 12 private patio suites, and four picnic areas.

“This new ballpark will be a welcome economic boost for the City of Utica and all of Macomb County,” [U.S. Rep. Candice] Miller said in a statement. “I can’t wait to hear ‘play ball.’”

The field is located at Moscone Drive and Auburn Road near M-59, west of M-53.
