Default Cutting Bus Service on Sunday?

If this goes through, it could have some significant repercussions, especially in an election year..
    http://www.freep.com/article/2009081...uns-on-Sundays

I drive, but I distinctly remember my years when I didn't.. and the difficulty of getting to various places by bus, especially during evening hours, late hours, and weekends.. I remember being a kid in Gary, IN, when the decision was made to cut all bus service on Sundays.. it was interminably frustrating..
At the very least, Bing needs to look at maintaining the most frequently used routes, and cut back on the number of buses a day..

and to think how people constantly harp against having light rail projects here..

Nice re-election present. This ought to put him in solid with Detroiters.

I believe I remember reading that DDOT Bus system is the only one in the country that is owned and opperated by a city. Is that true?

  4. #4

    Default

Maybe true. Goes back to the early 1920s, when the city bought the streetcar operations within city limits. Then it was the Detroit Department of Street Railways [[DSR), which gradually added bus service and tore up streetcar track whenever it could. All part of a strategy, no doubt, to help our largest employers. [[And you can see how well they've done by us, helping make the city into the glittering metropolis that all love and revere. )

Mayor's Bing's proposal to eliminate D-Dot Sunday bus service may effect starting August 28, 2009. However it hold off after August 28 2009. I urged all Detroiters and suburbanites to FIGHT this rediculous plan. Take back city public transportation. Fight the powers that be! PROTEST NOW!

Detroiters need D-DOT Sunday and Saturday bus service for church services, to and from work and visiting friends and do errands. The city will lose more money on the fare box rather than saving or making money. Save D-DOT from financial ruin from city leaders.

    WORD FROM THE STREET PROPHET

Tell our leaders that they must maintain city services or face recalls during for after their election year.

Well, this is not to say that this has no possibility of happening but...

A few months ago the MTA here in NYC started floating doomsday scenarios about extraordinary fare hikes and service cuts. They did eventually implement a fare increase, but it was nothing like what they had proposed. And none of the service cuts that they threatened ever became reality. It was a scare tactic to get the state to increase funding to the system so that they could plug their budget. My guess is that Bing is trying to push through some type of negotiations with the DDOT unions.

I ride the bus most often on the weekends and at night. I'd be extremely upset if these cuts were made. What they need to do is set up a downsizing plan and start to slowly cut service to the areas which are set aside for downsizing. Don't affect me, I live in a part of the city that's GROWING! This shouldn't affect DDOT's plans for building light rail [[I hope). The city didn't have any money to begin with, so the funds are coming for other sources as is.

How many people have to be screwed over by these cuts before we decide that they matter?

Default cutting bus servce on sunday?

Will all of the buses will not run on Sundays or some of the lines? Detroit has missed the boat many of times for mass transit to come into the city. The leaders had rather put money into roads. Cars drives on roads. Cars that had been produced by the BIG THREE which controlled and ran Detroit and her leaders. We don't even have an express bus that would take you to the airport from downtown non-stop. Until the leaders get out of the pockets of the Automobile company Detroiters will continue to see the demise in the transportation system. Michigan, in 2005 was suppose to had the first stage of Mass Transit running. The amtrak train track was to be used. A smaller car would had been running on that track when amtrak wasn't using it. The car was to take you from New Center area to the airport area. A month before the big event; someone from the state had said that a hold was put on it's starting date.I don't see Granholm, Bing or anyone else doing anything to improve transit or get mass transit in detroit or michigan period. T;hey are in the back pocket of people or corporations whom doesn't want to see it yet. Look up Detroit's Subways. That will tell you the history of the city's plight on getting mass transit

The Detroit Department of Transportation - DDOT should be privatized to be a for profit company.

The Michigan Department of Transportation – MDOT is still required to pay for the handicapped, if we fight for this funding but it is not enough to pay for the able bodied unless DDOT and SMART can lower their per passenger costs.

We have nearly the highest mass transit taxes in the nation compared to other cities according to the federal transit database. For example, Chicago residents pay less then half that we do as a matter of fact.

It is time for Wal-Mart, Burger King, Targets, Meijer, Pizza Hut, Wendy's and McDonalds to pay their own able-bodied workers and not the taxpayers.

It's time to vote NO next August 2010 to cap the SMART property tax.

YES, Danny. Let's slash those state funds and all federal funds. SMART lost all it's federal funds due to the Livonia opt out which Y OU supported.

Danny, YOU support illegal bus cuts and the DARTA

Danny, YOU supported the DDOT cuts with your votes.

So, go ahead and vote YES and you will see even more federal and state cuts to both SMART and DDOT.

Danny, we really do not need any federal or state money do we? and we do not really need jobs? Do we?

So, Let's all pay more for less bus service.

We have voted in Four mass transit tax increases and every single time we get promises and then more bus service cuts.

Every single time. But maybe the next time it will be different?

Come to Livonia City Hall and Detroit and debate me in person.

Danny, you live in Ferndale don't you? You are one of the lucky few are you not?

Danny, you want everyone else to pay for you? Don't you?

Sir, when was the last time you actually went to a church on Sundays? I'm sure any member of a Christian congregation would be glad to give you or their fellow member a ride to and from church.if Sunday bus service was cancelled. That's how you get to know your members and help your fellow members. It's unChristianlike not to.

A lot of people who work retail jobs, or other types of jobs that aren't 9-5 M-F, and who depend on the bus are going to get fired.

Now is a time when people are more likely to loose their cars or not be able to afford them, so I think if anything, now is the time to expand bus service. Mayor Bing must be out of touch with his constituents if he thinks this is a good idea.

Trainman quoted : YES, Danny. Let's slash those state funds and all federal funds. SMART lost all it's federal funds due to the Livonia opt out which Y OU supported.

Danny, YOU support illegal bus cuts and the DARTA

That's a LIE! and DARTA is DEAD!

Danny, YOU supported the DDOT cuts with your votes.

    That is a LIE!

So, go ahead and vote YES and you will see even more federal and state cuts to both SMART and DDOT.

That too is a LIE! Voting YES on the 2010 SMART bus millage will supple .08 mills per taxpayer to all Wayne, Oakland and Macomb transit authorities that will deliver the monies to SMART. The vote WILL NOT effect D-DOT.

Danny, we really do not need any federal or state money do we? and we do not really need jobs? Do we?

YES, we needs jobs in this state, even the state, local and federal govt's have to stimulate the economy by supplying more money or face depression.

So, Let's all pay more for less bus service.

WE don't have to, the SMART bus millage will cover that.

We have voted in Four mass transit tax increases and every single time we get promises and then more bus service cuts.

YES, Capitalism does has it drawbacks. Our system was designed NOT TO BE PERFECT, but to create a BALANCE OF POWER between government and economy. So DEAL WITH IT! or you rather be socialist and have the state take care of you or be a communist and have the state boss you around, wiping out your religion, freedom of speech, and your morality.

Every single time. But maybe the next time it will be different?
Come to Livonia City Hall and Detroit and debate me in person.

NO! Right now I rebutting your codespeak!

Danny, you live in Ferndale don't you? You are one of the lucky few are you not?

I do not live in city that has a fast growing homosexual community. I DO NOT hate homosexuals, but I condone its lifestyle pratices because the bible says:

"Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." Leviticus 18:22

"Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion." Romans 1:12-27

"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders." First Cornithians 6:9

Danny, you want everyone else to pay for you? Don't you?

YES! I would be in part to pay my taxes for somebody else, not for polticians but but to keep America running. The United States can't run without taxation with representation. So that anyting goes wrong with your taxes, we can stand up, lobby our government to change our taxes even though it may not be pretty for our politicians and other service.

The last I 've voted YES for the 2006 SMART bus millage, that were no proposals to build a bigger freeway system in our Metro-Detroit Area. It's just having the state, local govt's supplying monies from .06 mills in property taxes to the SMART buses so they run for years to come. A NO vote will cut ALL property taxes away from SMART busses causing them to SHUT DOWN for good. The result will be up to million jobs in the Metro Detroit area will be loss. Unemployment rates will rise cause the state and the feds will have to stimulate more money to the unepmloyment office in which the money will be running out soon. Violent crime and population flight from various cities will loom and people will have buy more cars result to raising bad ozone action polution that would lead to more health problems, the feds will have supply more federal stimulus money clean the air. That would cause more property taxes to go up. In a fact of fact our state, local and federal government might go bankrupt if we cut public transit. You don't want that WORSE CASE SENARIO!

    WORD FROM THE STREET PROPHET

Be ethical, logical and reasonable for Neda Soltani's sake.
