Default Detroit Rankings; NOT Good At All

    Third worst for Road Rage:

    Worst for raising kids:

    http://www.helium.com/items/847198-w...r-raising-kids

This one puts Detroit as the most violent city:

    http://bastardo.newsvine.com/_news/2...have-in-common

But I saw another story on TV that puts Detroit at # 3 behind New Orleans and Camden, NJ. Can't find a current link to that one right now.

Because they used a metropolitan division instead of the Detroit Metropolitan Statistical Area. It's an apples to oranges comparison since they compared a single metropolitan division of larger areas [[Detroit, Miami, Philadelphia) to the entire metropolitan statistical area of smaller regions [[Memphis, Stockton, Calif., Las Vegas).

You want a real kicker of a statistic?

Detroit's murder rate per 100,000 is higher than Baghdad, Iraq as of 2008. You have a increased chance of getting killed through violence on the streets of Detroit than in the Baghdad metro.

But so do the cities of DC, Camden, New Orleans and Gary, IN have higher rates as well than Baghdad. We do a great job in this country of ignoring and not solving our own problems.

I see Memphis at #2 for violent crime and have to wonder what constitutes a violent crime? Is spanking a kid in public a violent crime? Is what constitues a violent crime different from state to state? What about property crime and gun crime?

    Why use city-wide statistics?

Inside Detroit posts, "Downtown Detroit has 37% less crime than the national average. The crime in Downtown Detroit has decreased by 33% since 2001." http://www.insidedetroit.org/why-detroit/

Someone wbo lives and works in downtown doesn't need to visit and be affected by a poorly policed ghetto in southwest Detroit.

    Digitalvision,

I don't know where you're getting your information, but according to a May 1, 2009, Time Magazine article, the murder rate in Baghdad for 2008 was 48 per 100,000. http://www.time.com/time/world/artic...894566,00.html

Conversely, a June 2009 Detroit News article puts Detroit's murder rate for 2008 at 40.7 per 100,000. http://www.detnews.com/article/20090...port-homicides

Granted, Detroit's murder is still appallingly high, but any comparison to Baghdad fatuously sensationalizes Detroit's problems. For instance, I would bet every cent I have that Detroit's murder rate would drop precipitously if the streets were patrolled by the military, checkpoints were set up throughout, and downtown was walled off. Moreover, Detroit does not have bombings at Eastern Market or cars exploding at major intersections. Clearly, Detroit has major problems, but it is far from Baghdad.

Nor do planes have to take off from metro or city airport in a corkscrew to evade missiles. Nor are traffic lights in Detroit removed from all intersections because it's too dangerous to be stopped at a red light.

But I suppose it does sound cool to say you live in a city that is "more dangerous" than Baghdad.

Detroit is the greatest place to live. Remember people vote with their feet. That is why there are so many people moving into Detroit and not out of it.

    Oldertimer,

What's your point? When did ANYONE say Detroit is the "greatest place?" As I said, Detroit has "major problems" and an "appallingly high" murder rate. Perhaps it is no longer the Detroit you remember, but it sure as hell is not Baghdad!

can i ask a dumb question.

Why is this something that is even "post-able"

no offense to anyone here, but since when do we have to prove a point that Detroit has more problems than anywhere else.

While I am not going to be a "Rah Rah Cheerleader" for Detroit, i sure as hell dont think there is any value in kicking this horse when it is down.

Right now, Detroit is pretty shitty...I think we can all agree.

But here is where it gets tricky.

For the first time in a long time

    a. Detroiters seem to be voting for a mayor that actually wants to fix things [[and not just become king of the thugs)

    b. Detroiters actually voted for a couple of people with integrity [[pugh, cockerel, etc)

    c. Someone is actually giving two shits about the DPS enough to at least confront the multiple people who are skimming from the schools...and it looks like they are attempting to fix things.

Detroit is in some deep crap....but i am at least a little more optimistic than I was lets say a year ago.

Lets not try to bury the truth...but listing a collage of how others see us isnt a real good use of time...

Maybe i am just ranting here...

Let's suppose you're overweight. Do you look down upon yourself in the mirror and dwell over all the reasons you've got it bad every day, or do you cut calories and take up jogging?

It seems to me we're pretty good at the former, but from what I can tell, a lot of us on this message board don't even have jogging shoes...
