Since Gilbert’s company took ownership, Teftsis said they’ve worked with local businesses to keep the district’s historic character and limit chain businesses. Last year, the casino partnered with businesses to introduce patio seating and entertainment on Monroe street during the summer. That will continue in June, Teftsis said.

Okay, I have to break some news to everyone: Greektown the Casino has very little to do with Greek or Greek-American culture. Neither, for that matter, does Greektown the Neighborhood very much. I don't gamble, and don't care what they call the casino. I hope the move improves their business and leads to more jobs and tax revenue for our city. What I DO really like is the fact that DG wants to better integrate the casino into the neighborhood, and the neighborhood to the surrounding area. The man understands urban development. If the name Jack flops, they'll rename it again. I suggest "Pete."

Having looked at the YouTube video in that story, I now realize that the stupid name is indeed being marketed to 15 year old boys, or at least overgrown ones. Man, I'm getting old. EastsideAl, I think the whole point is getting it to be the younger, hipper casino. While nice in many ways, it lacks the top-line amenities MGM and to a lesser extent MotorCity have. So older folks with more money might want the spas, expensive restaurants, etc of the other casinos, younger folks might want the funkier, edgier one that is in walkable downtown. Jack might or might not be the right name; repositioning the casino as something different, not just the third wheel of Detroit casinos, is a good move.

I don't like to think where Detroit would be if Dan Gilbert never came to town and rebranding is a solid idea when you are continuously the third grossing casino in a market of three... But, and a big one at that, is when the marketing boys pitched this one for a variety of reasons that were quickly pointed out in this thread it is somewhat bewildering that he didn't tell them to get the "Jack" out of the office.

With an unknown number of precincts reporting around the country, the WDIV poll is reporting a whopping 90% of the nation against this move. Only thirteen states are ambivalent, and only one with a majority [[of one) in favor.

Really makes me wonder about the 10% that think the name change is a good idea. My guess is that 9% accidentally hit the wrong button and the remaining 1% work for "Jack Entertainment" or the marketing group that came up with this stupid idea.

I have a hunch that if the proposed casino out by Metro becomes a reality, Greektown or Jack or whatever it is called will close its doors and become a part of Detroit history.

Jack White has done some good things for the city by helping out the Masonic and Clark Park as well as opening a business in the Cass Corridor. [[Aight, I know, its Midtown.) So I think its great they named the Casino after him.

I doubt the Metro casino will come to fruition. I don't think the airport area will ever be a significant destination for our local entertainment dollars. And I think that the Greektown/Jack Casino is the casino best positioned to benefit from downtown's rapidly increasing foot traffic.

I agree. Calling it "Qube" would only be cool if the building was actually a cube. Although, "Rectangular Quboid" seems dumb too.

Well I was referring to places that were re-branded with stupid names. FFB is now usually referred to by its address which isn't at all uncommon and General Motors Building is now Cadillac Place which isn't too bad either.
