Thread: NYE in the D

    Default NYE in the D

What is everyone up to this NYE? I'm thinking of heading down to Campus Martius and watching the "D" drop. Also debating whether or the the $69 is worth it for the ticket to get into the tent down there. Has anyone gone in years past? Thoughts or advice? Any other cool things going on around town?

I've been in the past. It is fun and worth going too. It is not worth paying $70 to go in the tent or $200 to go to Townhouse or whatever the gouge du jour is. Just go to the liquor store on Woodward, brown bag whatever you want [[or you can openly drink it in Campus Martius on the south end) and bar hop downtown at places that don't have insane covers [[e.g. Cafe D' Mongo, Whiskey Disko, Whiskey Parlor, Well, Baltimore). That will be much more fun.

belleislerunner gives good advice. No need for the cover charges. Another Campus Martius event is the Meridian Winter Blast, in February. No huge cover charge, heated tents with live entertainment, bar hopping available. We actually get a room at Book Cadillac for that weekend, in celebration of my partner's birthday, and end up at Harbor House for food and music.

One of my concerns with bar hopping would be cover charges. Any experience with those bars on NYE?

You're so obsessing over this, maybe you should just stay home with a 5th of Jack, and watch it on TV?

Start with lunch at Joe Muer's on Gratiot, then a little shopping at Hudsons, watch a high school concert at Grinnell' across the street, a drink at the London Chop House, dinner at the Caucas Club, hop a cab to Olympia to see the RedWings. Maybe make it home in time to see Dick Clark and the ball drop in Times Square.

That cab happen to be a souped up DeLorean by the way?

Nice old school tour Rock. Let's see how we would do that today....

Start out with lunch at Joe Muer's in the Renaissance Center, do a little shopping at the shops of RenCen, hop the People mover to the Financial District station, get out for a drink at the London Chop House, back on the People Mover to Greektown Station, hit the casino to double up your money, back on the People Mover to Renaissance Station, supper at Coach Insignia overlooking the D from 70 floors up, back on the PM to Joe Louis Arena Station to see the Red Wings game, whip out your iPhone to arrange an Uber ride to Campus Martius, catch a concert by the Detroit Youth Choir, get your drunk on at the VIP tent, then watch the D drop from the Chase Building, 10,9,8,7....

Nice preppy tour, Lowell, but it looks too pricey for my blood. Maybe I will just hop the DSR trolley with jjaba in front of the Majestic building, go up to the beautiful Sears store in Highland Park, buy a pair of ice skates, then take a leisurely walk up Woodward to 6 Mile, get a cup of coffee at the Toddle House and go skating at Palmer Park. Hope the log cabin is open and maybe even has a fireplace working. Jjaba does not like the cold. Happy New Year to all.

Not a bad little day but unless you're old, injured or really lazy I'm sure walking would work just fine considering how close all these locations are and to piggyback on a previous comment how about mixing in something cheap to appease those who prefer rubbing elbows with the working class?

Aww don't get all "too pricey" and "rubbing elbows with the working class" on me. You skipped over the part where I figured that out for you -- "...[take] the People Mover to Greektown Station, hit the casino to double up your money..."
