Default Wahlberger Burger Joint Opening in Greektown

Is there anything Detroit needs less than another place selling gigantic overpriced burgers? I keep hearing how everyone wants more healthy options yet these places are springing up not just in Detroit but everywhere.

How do you know that they're overpriced? Their website does not have any prices on the menu. And the burgers are hardly gigantic, they are offered in 1/3 pound, "nearly 1/2 pound" and 2/3 pound sizes according to their website. These are standard sizes for hamburgers at most restaurants.

If you don't like the kind of food they offer you're quite free to not patronize the place. I don't care for fast food joints myself nor do I care for downtown or Greektown so I most likely will not dine there. But I am certainly not going to take to the internet to complain about someone opening a new business that will provide jobs and produce tax revenue in a city that desperately needs both.

There must be a demand for such a place or they would not be investing here.

Okay, they're not gigantic. The one here in Toronto charges $10-13 each [[5.65 for a hotdog). It's not so much the price as I would prefer Greektown have a variety of mid-priced restaurants [[Chinese, Italian, etc) instead of more burger chains. There is already 5 guys, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc. Not sure why you care if you don't even eat downtown?

My guess is that the prices will be comparable with Five Guys and Bagger Dave's. Let the competition continue, I guess, lol.

I see they have tater tots. I'm in.

Hopefully Mark will throw in a rap performance at the grand opening.

I would prefer Greektown to still be all Greek like it used to be. There are other places for "Chinese, Italian, etc".

Today's Greektown resembles a food court at a shopping mall.

Head up to Orchard Lake road near 13 Mile and stop at Jaw's Jumbo Burgers. Better then any of those chain places, reasonably priced too, burgers are under 5 bucks. It's got Five Guys beat all to hell. Go ahead, you can thank me in advance because you will after you eat there.

    Yeah...except it's super far away.

...Interesting news. I'd be happier if it was elsewhere downtown. Fingers crossed this goes closer to Randolph than to Beaubien-- Greektown gets less and less interesting with every national chain that goes in there.

Your sentiments echo just about everyone in Metro Detroit. It really is a shame there aren't the traditional Little Italy, Greektown, Chinatown, etc that other cities have. All we really had was Greektown, but the writing was on the wall when that spot was selected for the casino. It was only a matter of time.

Wahlberger's should be away from Greektown and to located where the Olga's Kitchen used to be.

My only experience with Walhburgers is watching their reality television series, I would certainly give them a try.

So you're in Toronto, complaining about a restaurant opening in Detroit. Cool, very cool. Look, you don't have to like it, but it brings another dining opportunity to Downtown. I share the other sentiments, I'd rather it not be in 'Greektown' which is basically no longer Greek, but it will bring in jobs and revenue to a continued hotspot. Not sure why you care if you live in Toronto.

Are you one of the investors in this Funkyburger? If not, why take things so personally?

You took a page right out of SyGolden426667's book there.

It won't keep me up nights if another burger place opens in Greektown. It's just that I, like I believe most people here, realize Greektown won't return to its past, nor maybe should it. On the other hand, it can hopefully evolve into something better than a strip of fast food burgers and coffee spots. Why do I care living in Toronto? Because I live in the far western burb of Mississauga and most days would rather jump on the 401 and drive to the tunnel entrance in 3 hours rather than deal with how busy downtown Toronto has become. I visit Detroit about 6 times per year spending 2-3 nights per visit, resulting in about 50 downtown Detroit meals per year, mostly in the Greektown area. If it's hard explaining this to a Detroiter, imagine the trouble I have around here.

Mark Wahlberg is a convicted felon. I'm guessing his name won't be on the LARA application for a liquor license.

You can go a block away to the Detroiter and get a burger, fries, and a beer for under $10. And it's an excellent burger.

Welcome to Detroit Mr. Wahlburg. Thanks for bringing investment and jobs to the city. I hope you discover more opportunities for investments on your visits and tell your friends back in Hollywood about the recent resurgence in Detroit.

How many people here have eaten at Wahlburgers? Have you tried the food?

Or are you just going to write it off because he's part of the establishment and it wasn't made by some 8th generation burger king on a stove given to him by his great uncle who was the first person to steam a burger bun and the recipe was carried here in someone's ass to escape the Nazi's because it's just that much better?

Has any press coverage mentioned the issue of sports memorabilia on display at the restaurant? Presumably, Mr. Wahlberg & co. are die hard Celtics/ Red Sox/ Patriots/ Bruins fans.

But I don't know if any of that will go over well here in Detroit.

Reminds me of the Captain Koons scene from Pulp Fiction

Works for me. I rarely eat downtown or go to what is left of "Greek"town, but I think I'd like to see this sorta commentary about the D over the usual.
