Default Man dressed as security guard robs armored vehicle outside Greektown Casino in Detroi

I've always been of the opinion that you have to be awfully dumb to be a criminal, but in this case, the victim was at least one twist short of a slinky.

DETROIT [[WXYZ) - Detroit police say an armored vehicle was robbed on Friday outside of the Greektown Casino.

It was a Loomis Armored vehicle that was targeted.

Sources tell 7 Action News that a man wearing a security guard uniform asked the driver to open the vehicle so he could get the cash out. The driver did, because they are required to stay in the driver's seat, and the suspect walked away with more than $500,000.

The FBI is now taking the lead on the investigation.

We're told no shots were fired and no one was injured.

Police have not released any further details about the robbery.

Probably a former Greektown Casino security guard who knew the routine.

Who do you mean by the victim? The casino? Obviously this was an inside job unless both guards were asleep in the front with the back door open.

This is better than a robbing a bank. Usually at a bank you get under $20k, this dude got 500k.

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. This situation smells fishier than three week old Gefilte fish.

How is the guy on the inside feeling tonight? He's feeling all the heat bearing down and wondering if he will ever see a dime of that half million.

They knew to do it in the morning when folks were still hung over from the Tryptophan, football, and festivities [[and worrying if their wife got the new video game system for the kids out of the way at the mall rush today). I always thought stories like this were kept hush-hush, as it only propagates Ocean's Eleven myths that crime pays [[after all, almost all our crime shows have investigators who will track you down for that overdue library book).

Few [[goofy) questions: Where did they get the outfit?

Was the outfit easily removable to do a quick change? [[which is why you should always pay attention to the shoes as they told us at every retail job I had)

They obviously knew past tapes are going to be viewed to scope anyone spending far too much time staking out the lay-out. Did they do that months before and assumed it was all routine afterwards and leading up to [[with a few latenight bar rush drive-bys to see if any construction has popped up to change things)?

    Was there a pass off?

If so, how many pass offs and vehicle changes occurred?

    Again, how many involved?

Did the one walking out with the money do something so bold that no cop or investigator would ever assume to follow up on [[like hop the People Mover on schedule)?

Being fishy and an inside job may be the case. There was the 1980 Memorial Day heist of the Depositor's Trust in Medford, MA by --well, cops, themselves.http://homenewshere.com/wilmington_t...99b679d4f.html

Good for him. He did it without a shot fired, nice. Hope he has a Merry Christmas.

This type of crime was cased and organized. Just like the Great Lufthansa Heist.

Tell that to the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indian's children who will be going hungry tonight as a result of this horrific crime. Oh wait, they don't own it anymore.

I doubt his timing on Black Friday was a coincidence, I bet the bags are typically a bit heavier than a usual Friday.

He found his "savings" on Black Friday, "life savings" that is.

Now it's time for DPD/Michigan State Police/Feds to spend a million+ in searching for this guy.

I'm pretty sick of seeing breaking news about a bank or Casino that gets robbed when nobody gets hurt and financially the loss falls on a insurance company. These same insurance companies are making money hand over fist so whatever.

I know of an establishment on the order of this that had a similar large amount walk away before it ever made it's way to the armored truck. It was an inside job.

It was solved and a few years later they rehired the the insider and put the person in charge of loss prevention.

It was sort of a family affair...

Dan, I'm a little confused. Was the "insider" that was rehired the person who orchestrated the crime, or the one who figured out who "done it"? The latter would make the most sense but you do say its a "family affair", and I know some crazy families so...

I was referring to the driver. The story has been updated to say the thief was wearing a Loomis uniform [[before it just said security uniform). Regardless, if you don't know the guard, wouldn't it be prudent to ask for ID? And furthermore, wouldn't you have already seen your partner in the truck earlier? If somebody different now wants to get into your truck, wouldn't you ask a few questions?

If the driver was in on it, then he's even dumber. Does he think he's not going to be considered suspect number 1? Meanwhile, his buddy's on a flight to South America.

Haha, figured that to be the case when I read your final line:

"It was sort of a family affair"

Kind of a cool story of forgiveness amongst family members I suppose.

This morning I told someone that I'd bet that within one week the guy that "walked away" will be busted, very likely still in Detroit. Slick enough to pull it off, but not smart enough to truly get away with it...
Best case, he'll be caught within 3-6 months hiding out with friends/relatives only a few states away. With a hell of a high price to pay for a very short term of "life's a party..."

The only way to "get away with it" would be to plan far enough out...
    1. study/review extradition policies and visa/immigration policies to find a safe long term residence
    2. passport in hand?
    3. purchase plane ticket a week ahead of robbery to lessen chance of being handcuffed at the boarding gate...

    4. kept secret for
    5. future use...

Even if you bail out of the country, you still need to find a way to transport that kind of money over there. Maybe give it to a "trusted" diamond dealer and have him mail you diamonds.

500k? thats less than snyder stole from the d. its less than duggan stole from the d and its less than king kwame got. even less than turkia mullen!

fbi's time is better spent looking at the top crooks. not security guards playing patty cake at the casino.

Vic. I agree-probably states away. Laying low is the key. No extravagant spending. If he doesn't keep it a low-key Christmas-he may stick out. Maybe he bought someone that liver they always wanted...if so, best to them both.

Sure beats renting a room from that old lady and tunneling under, while pretending to be a band that plays Renaissance music from the Rococo period.

Guy was laying low in Detroit. Article states no casino cash was involved. Looking forward to more details.
