Default 3 Detroit journalists lose at NABJ convention

Rochelle Riley, Angelo Henderson and Andrew Humphrey may not feel too sunny down in the Sunshine State, where fellow members of the National Association of Black Journalists chose others for leadership posts.

At a 5-day Tampa convention wrapping up today, Detroit candidates went 0-3 in these elections:

    * President: Henderson, a former DetNews + local Wall Street Journal reporter who now hosts "Your Voice" on WCHB, lost 325 - 248 to a Fox affiliate anchor from Jackson, Miss.

    * VP/broadcast: Humphrey, a WDIV meteorologist/reporter lost 282 - 228 to a San Francisco radio reporter.

    * VP/print: In the closest race, Freep columnist Riley was just 39 votes behind a Philadelphia Inquirer editor [[298 - 259).

On a certain level this could be a backlash based on KK and the overall political situation in Detroit. Perhaps the other black journalist felt that the detroiters didn't take enough of a leadership role in dealing with the problems thereby not worthy of
top leadership posts in the organization

Sensible theory, FirstAndTen. Hadn't considered that.

Another possibility in Henderson's case is that the working [[or want-to-be-working) journalists who make up nearly all of the association prefer one of their own -- an anchor/investigative reporter -- as president rather than an ordained minister who hosts a niche-audience radio talk show, is a correspondent for Christian Television Network and touts himself as "president of Angelo Ink, a writing, speaking and media consulting firm."

Bit of a distance from actual journalism.

are we to automatically assume that these three things are related?

    are we that paranoid?

This originally was shared as news of possible interest about three local media figures. No conspiracy theory was implied . . . or even imagined by me, for that matter.

Sometimes a factual posting is just a factual posting.

you have lumped those three items in the same post. Unless those three things were the only things that happened at thic conference [[which i highly doubt), then you must have found some correlation with them.

Subsequent responses theorized that there was some sort of vast conspiracy

or your quote where you said this...

At a 5-day Tampa convention wrapping up today, Detroit candidates went 0-3 in these elections:
this post seems to claim that Detroit went 0-3....which would lead any person readin this that you felt this was a loss for Detroit, and not for the three individuals....

So no, I didnt look at this as JUST a factual posting but a somewhat paranoid account of how Detroit went 0-3 due to something other than the fact that the opponents of these three individuals were better.

Wow, you cats sure be fiesty this morning.

Kathy Times, the gal that defeated Angelo Henderson, was the organization's Vice President.

Bob Butler, the guy that defeated Andrew Humphrey, was the organization's board member, represented the westernmost states.

Dierdre Childress, the gal that defeated Rochelle Riley, was is the organization's secretary.

    Incumbants won.

From the sound of things, the members either voted Name Recognition, or thought that Change was good for Washington but not for the NABJ.
