    Default Identify This Building

    Does anybody know what this building is/was? It sits on the Rouge River just across from Zug Island, behind Detroit water and sewage. It looks like some sort of rail terminal, but can't find any info on it. Anyone have any info? Looked kinda interesting on Google Maps.

    It has a big gate and a guard house on Jefferson, and it looks like even the railroad tracks might be gated off. A very interesting find!

    Looks like a locomotive service facility.

    Loveland doesn't have an owner for the site. The plot in front of it - including the approach for the RR tracks - is owned by Detroit Water and Sewer.

    That's what piqued my interest. Gated on all sides, gated tracks, plus they have rail tanker cars parked at the entrance to block any incoming rail traffic.

    This is the Chlorination & De-chlorination Facility for the DWSD Waste Water Treatment Plant [[WWTP).

    The original chlorination facility at the WWTP was located underneath the cafeteria in the main administration building. Eventually it occurred to someone that if there was ever a chlorine leak, it would kill everyone in that heavily populated building before they could have a chance to issue a warning. It was also noted that the rail cars containing chlorine at the original facility were potentially vulnerable to vandalism.

    Also, environmental scientists were raising the alarm about the excess levels of chlorine in the WWTP effluent that was being discharged into the river.

    Therefore it was decided to build a safer and more protected facility farther away from the other WWTP buildings and heavily traveled roads and bridges. Chlorine rail cars can be securely and safely stored and unloaded at this new facility, which is far away from prying eyes on the ground and nearby bridges.

    This facility also removes excess chlorine from the WWTP effluent by injecting sodium hydroxide as the effluent flows through the outflow tunnel that passes under this facility on its way to the Detroit River.

    The small yellowish building behind one of the larger buildings houses an emergency generator that powers the facility during an outage.
