Default New Comic Book/Fantasy Conventions in Detroit

The face of comic books is changing. This fall in Detroit, two new conventions will bring the work of women and people of color to the forefront of the industry.

First up in September, MECCAcon, the Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts, returns for its second year in Detroit. Organizer Maia Crown Williams has a clear vision for what she hopes to achieve now and in the future with MECCAcon. With a long history of helping organize other Detroit-area comic cons, Williams says it was time to branch off on her own and create an event that really drew on Detroit talent.

"Detroit is very big on art, very nationally and globally known. So I wanted it to be more than just comic books; art, and music, and film," she says. And it is: the schedule includes a DJ performance, a concert, and an indie film festival curated by award-winning filmmaker Ka'ramuu Kush.

She also wanted to see a convention atmosphere that was welcoming to everyone, especially families, and highly inclusive of creators of color and women.

Maia Crown Williams, organizer of MECCAcon"It is my mission to make sure that children know that all 'heroes' do not look the same, that many actually look just like them," says Williams.

This kind of event is great to have in the city. The talent level is obvious and young people that are talented is what we want to attract. Inspiration is special and anytime it can be harnessed for good it is a powerful thing.

Well, I know my all-time favorite comic book hero, Ozark Ike, was not a local Detroiter, although he might have had some kin in Ypsilanti.

Don't forget Youmacon is this weekend at the RenCen and Cobo. Don't be surprised to see all kinds of people in costume around downtown and on the People Mover.

Eh-iffy. Both were created by Trendle [[who probably got "black-eyed" pranked by his friends when looking into one of his own Nickelodeons-thus, getting the whole masked man fixation) and were aired on WXYZ. Graser [[who played the Lone Ranger on the radio) was from Detroit, and Seaton was from South Bend [[next to Niles, MI, as we all know).

If Detroit wishes to commemorate such things, we should have a Masked Man Day [[not necessarily a "Masked Man and Partner Day" as this raunchy Lenny Bruce skit illustrateshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5fpcaPE0dk).

Just think, anyone in the Domino mask business will make a nice haul. Isn't that what Holidays, festivals, and conventions are all about? Making money. Just ask the prostitutes [[Hi Ho!) who follow the caravans and droves across country to the festivals and conventions alone [[heck. I could make money just writing a screenplay about such a lifestyle).
