Default Story With Reference To Empty Buildings In Downtown

This story is about 'making pretty' an abandoned building ahead of the ASAE convention but contains a fascinating 'little study' about abandoned buildings in downtown Detroit.

    http://www.detroitnews.com/story/bus...asae/31078873/

One can say since 2009 there has been a 75% reduction in the number of abandoned buildings [[meeting a certain defined criteria):

"The good news is that downtown Detroit has far fewer big empty buildings than it has in previous years. In August 2009, the Detroit News counted 48 buildings — structures at least five stories in height or at least 10,000 square feet in space — that were vacant and had no development plan in the works. That number has been reduced dramatically- it’s likely a dozen or less."

That's a hell of an improvement in that short of time. Just need someone to get the freaking Book Tower rolling already.

I think that number is deflated. I feel like there is more than a dozen buildings of five stories or more that are still abandoned.

It sounds like they are not counting buildings that have development plans so there are more that are still empty.

Good points, but the good news is that the inventory of empty buildings is being substantially reduced and will, presumably, in time be depleted.

After that, if the demand is still unmet, maybe some new buildings will be built.

I was thinking that too, but doesn't it still seem like there are a lot of vacant buildings downtown?

According to a months old Detroit News Article, there's about 10 buildings still left vacant. Though it counts the Fail Jail and the Wayne County building which does have plans in the works. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other buildings that aren't already mentioned in this article.

What about across the street from the Michigan Building on Bagley? Has anyone heard of a development going in there? I noticed they are selling parking in the lot now on game nights.
