Default Eastern Market - Detroit's New Art Center? Major New Gallery & Mural Project Coming

Eastern Market area continues it evolution as an art display and venue destination. Curbed reports on the progress of a 9,000 square foot new art gallery shaping up there and scheduled to open in September.

Wasserman Projects, as it will be called, joins Interstate Gallery and Red Bull galleries as major venues.

Wasserman Projects, billed by Detroit developer and arts philanthropist Gary Wasserman as "an independent, interdisciplinary arts space," is in the throes of major renovations in preparation for its grand opening on September 25. The first exhibition planned for the space, which will open to the public during Detroit Design Festival, will feature work by NYC artist Markus Linnenbrink and his collaborator, Miami Beach architect Nick Gelpi. The installation will combine art and architecture, making the gallery into an artwork visitors can walk around in.

Also upcoming in Eastern Market in September is the Murals in the Market event.

Murals in the Market, a nine-day festival planned for September, promises roughly 45 national and local artists to create dozens of large-scale pieces of authorized street art in Eastern Market. The festival, to be formally announced today, underscores the increasingly visible role that outdoor murals are playing in revitalizing Detroit and how street art has moved from the shadows of illegal graffiti to sanctioned murals embraced by businesses and city hall.

A short walk from the Mies, the Dequindre Cut, the Heidelberg Project, with an ample cluster of affordable spaces well-suited for studios and galleries, weekend crowds, and room to grow, the area seems a perfect location for this to happen.

Gary Wasserman is a good guy and a keen-eyed business man. He rarely loses money on his business ventures. You could make a handsome living by just following his lead.

He also has a fantastic house on Quarton Lake up in Birmingham.

And his wife Rita is superfine, super smart with impeccable taste.

It makes a lot of sense for people to be looking to put things into the Eastern Market area--the area is substantially underutilized every day but Saturday, but it is well-located and has lots of parking.
