Except the very story you cite says the stores are not being closed, at least not right now. They are being sold to a third party and rebranded as Dollar Express.

    Yeah, that makes more sense.

It's the same thing that happened to the Farmer Jack and Kroger stores in the city when they closed [[the Chaldeans purchased them and operated them).

The Gujaratis from India are on the case. The new owners will wear a new colored bindi.
There are now over 100,000 East Indian-Americans living in Michigan. Although many of them are in high tech. back shops, they also are very good at retail.

Hindu Temples have risen in Troy and Novi, Michigan. Good sized populations live in Novi, Troy, Farmington Hills, Canton, Redford Twp., W. Bloomfield, Garden City, Sterling Hts.. and some around Hamtramck.

In a back bedroom in a house in Redford, the family meeting will jump at the opportunity. You heard it here first. [[all the old motels are already taken.) Children raised in those old motels are running Hiltons now. Amazing.

Mention was made of Chaldeans, another candidate for the takeover. There are 121,000 Chaldeans living in SE Michigan. They're from Syria and Iraq. There are 8 Chaldean Catholic Churches here. The neighborhood of Chaldean Town is Seven Mile Road from John R over to Woodward Avenue in Detroit. Chaldeans have significant numbers in Oak Park, Southfield, Troy, W. Bloomfield, Walled Lake, Hazel Park, Rochester Hills, Ferndale, Warren, Farmington Hills, and Ann Arbor. Ofcourse, they are good at retail also. Many were recruited by the Ford Motor Co. River Rouge Plant in the 1920s.
Chaldeans made their way to Chicago and San Deigo also.
    jjaba on the Westside.

More of these people need to lay roots in Detroit proper. Buy homes, apartment buildings, open small businesses, restaurants, build Hindu temples. Make urban Detroit more diverse.

I guess dollar store can be considered decent retail. I guess they're better then crappy party stores, wig shops and hair braiding places. So I guess then I'm sorry to see them close.

The problem is since most of the regional job base [[Automation Alley) has been downsized during the last 50 years. They many ethnic families can't build their communities in Detroit. This is also due [[ after the 1967 riots); to racial problems, xenophobia, more black folks moving into Detroit neighborhoods, white flight to the suburbs, poor schools, awful police response, corrupt city government, demarcation, neighborhood blockbusting, slum clearance, restrictive covenants, auto insurance redlining, high taxation, high violent street crime ect... Unless these every urban problems can be solved, Detroit will not reach its diverse roots. This city is not going be like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York City. Forget it the best Detroiters and suburbanites can do is rebuild, revitalize, cope and hope. It least will still are the renaissance city.

These discount stores [[unlike the true one-dollar per item stores like Dollar Tree) are a great asset to the city. Many sell brand names [[Dollar General does) and offer an alternate to CVS and Walgreens higher prices and everyone cannot get to Target. I always preferred Dollar General over Family Dollar.

Dollar General has better products, more variety [[I used to find Iam cat food reduced there). And better security. Family Dollar was legend for first-of-the-month robberies and shootings [[including that double murder of the two staff persons in Dearborn a couple of years back). They were apparently too cheap to have a security guard at their stores.

His quartermasters are playing their pennyfarthing whistles on to victory! He must, however, watch out for incoming salvos from Loonie Admiral from across the river.
