Default Detroit Olympian Henry Carr Passes

I spotted this in a Facebook entry...

The post read: "The great Detroiter Henry Carr died. Northwestern High School athlete and Olympian. I remember him competing against Mackenzie High School. Had the Olympian Deli on Plymouth Road in Northwest Detroit .Wonderful memories."

From his Wikipedia entry: "Carr was a state champion sprinter for Northwestern High School in Detroit having posted a 100 yard time of 9.3 seconds."

He went on to win Gold Medals in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in 200 meters and the 4x400 m relay.

I'm very saddened to hear of his passing. My Dad, big track fan that he is, always talked about Henry Carr as one of the greats from the Detroit area. In addition to his high school and Olympics exploits, he was also NCAA champion at 220 yards while at Arizona State and played in the NFL for the New York Giants.

He seems to have had an eventful life, which included overcoming adversity a few times, and eventually leaving his athletic past behind. Here is a very interesting obit:

His entry in the Michigan Track & Field Hall of Fame, with his athletic record and some more photos:

And a video of his big race in Tokyo [[with Italian narration):
