    • This weekend promises to be “hog heaven” for anyone who enjoys ribs, barbecue, and all things pork with Wyandotte Mayor Joseph Peterson’s annual BBQ Rib Throwdown. The free event begins 5 p.m. Friday with the WBA Mayor Peterson’s BBQ Rib Throwdown and finishes off Saturday with the Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event, the WBA Pork in the Park. Mayor Peterson’s BBQ Rib Throwdown Festival takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. on Sycamore Street at Biddle Avenue, outside Wyandotte City Hall. Festivities on Saturday will be held 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. along Bishop Park’s riverside with food vendors, live music and entertainment all day long, beer tents, and a classic car show.     • “Ukrainian Art Masters” opens May 15 with a reception in the main gallery of the Downriver Council for the Arts, 81 Chestnut St., Wyandotte. Thirteen unique artists will exhibit a variety of art mediums. The exhibit will remain on display through June 5.

    • The 38th annual Wyandotte River Run kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with a Teddy Bear Trot, followed by a 1-mile run/walk and a 5K run/walk at 7 p.m. at BASF Waterfront Park. Medals will be given to all finishers, and awards will be given to overal winners and the top three in each age group. Advance registration for the 38th annual Wyandotte River Run is $25 and those older than 62 get a 10 percent discount. On race day, the cost is $30.     • Heritage Park Petting Farm kicks off the spring season with “Wild Weekends” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 16 and 17. The event includes the Whispering Pines Animal Kingdom, the reptile house, camels, goats, sheep, piglets and more. Free crafts will be available for kids and Flutterby Faces will turn youngsters into exotic animals through face painting for a small fee. Light refreshments also will be available for purchase. Admission is $4 a person and is cash only. Free shuttle service is included.
    • The Lincoln Park Memorial Day Parade will march down Fort Street at 1 p.m. Sunday. The parade will be led by Raymond LaLonde, a 98-year-old World War II veteran and recipient of a Purple Heart who served in the Philippines, New Guinea and the South Pacific. The parade will feature nearly 40 different organizations moving south down Fort Street, from White to Merrill streets, and is expected to draw about 2,000 attendees.

    • The city of Woodhaven's citywide garage sale will be held May 16.

    • Flat Rock’s spring citywide garage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 16 and 17. A permit for $5 must be purchased at the City Clerk’s office. St. Vincent DePaul trucks will be at City Hall collecting donations. Maps of sale addresses will be available at City Hall.

    • Wyandotte’s spring citywide garage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 16 and 12 to 4 p.m. May 17. Maps of participating sale locations along with a categorized listing of items will be sold for $1 during the sale at the Ford-MacNichol Home. It costs $20 to participate in the sale: $10 for the license, a $5 participant fee and a $5 sign deposit. The deadline for completed applications, available at the museum office, is 5 p.m. May 13. When participants return their sign to the Wyandotte Museums Office by 5 p.m. May 29, the $5 deposit will be refunded.

    • The Allen Park Farmers Market is holding a special “Flower Power” market day this Saturday, where attendees can buy, give away or exchange plants and flowers. There will also be a food vendor providing hotdogs, hamburgers and ribs to market-goers, Hayball said. The Saturday market will be held from 11 to 4 p.m. May 16 on Park Avenue between Harrison Avenue and McLain Avenue.
