Late 90's early 00's Detroit tech company.....

In the late 90's or early 00's there was a tech company downtown, office on Woodward. They were all the buzz for a while, though I don't recall what they actually did, I think software design? CEO was young brown hair, glasses, poster child for a new Detroit. Saw him speak at Cobo with Scott McNealy circa 2001. Can someone help me remember what the company was?

I know this is vague......

Rootlevel, CEO was John Lauer, specialty was web application development. They imploded shortly after the dot-com bubble popped. Used to work there when they were above Niki's in Greektown.
