Default Does the rise of Ferndale make Corktown irrelevant?

I saw the three star review of a new Ferndale bbq joint, Zeke's in today's News and I put myself in the shoes of the average suburban couple from Macomb Twp or Troy who dines at Slows. Why bother driving the extra 10 miles each way, dealing with crappy Detroit proper roads and potential property crime? Just to say we ate in Detroit?

Ferndale is home to the region's hottest restaurant, [[and Freep's restaurant of the year 2014), Torino. Lots of bars, coffee shops, new restaurants.

Detroit is a nationally recognized name brand. No one outside of Southeast Michigan gives a hoot about what's in Ferndale.

I had to double check the date on this post. Ferndale has been popular for at least 10 or 15 years now. I think a better question might be: Does the rise of Corktown make Ferndale irrelevant?

corktown is completely irrelevant... why else would there be new restaurants popping up left and right?

What a ridiculous thread. In a metropolitan area of over 4 million people, why can't we have both?

In it's favor, Corktown does have the best known example of ruin porn on the planet.

Silly thread! Ferndale was cool 40 yrs ago. Corktown has way major history.

Sorry I was terse, lived in Ferndale, two locations. It was a great place to be. That was long ago. It was central and had many ammenities. We liked it and almost bought a home there.

My homing beacon is strong though, bought in Detroit. I still love Detroit, challenges galore but it is alive with future potential, kind of like a Phoenix, rebirth from ashes.

I enjoy the pride Corktown has in it's residential and commercial properties. I exalt that they have survived dispite Mouroun.

Ferndale is cool to visit during the Dream Cruise. For the rest of the year, there's Detroit and Corktown.

Downtown Ferndale has a good number of restaurants. Besides that, I can't think of anything that makes Ferndale particularly notable or ascendant. In terms of schools and attractiveness to middle class, it was more desirable in the past.

Corktown is like 5 blocks and 10 restaurants and not really a major thing. There's plenty of room for more than one neighborhood with restaurants in a metro of 5 million.

Ferndale has a proposed project that will add parking garage with condos on top of them. It will resolve parking issues and also add density to downtown Ferndale.

Not only that but it highlights this region's tribalism. Ferndale and Corktown can exist independently of each other and be both successful.

My trolling instincts must be dull. I guess trying to trash Corktown for Ferndale must be it.

Lets see I was in Eastern Market, Midtown, Corktown and my favorite Southwest Detroit. Shopped everywhere. Had fun, ate well. Did the same when we lived in Ferndale.

    Why pit burb against city?

Did miss Hamtramck today, I love Shrodeks. Best meat market around. Don't eat much meat but love quality when I do.

I have avoided using the word trolling, got beat up for saying so. Trolls stroll on nice forums.

So fuck them and let ideas and concepts flow that encourage arts, business and ideas flow in city and suburbs to better our total environment.

Even Buffalo Wild Wings in Ferndale is folding and moving to the old Barnes and Noble in Royal Oak. Tough times in the Fashionable F.

Awe so nice, see people, Southeast MI environs can engage.

Sorry i swore though. Didn't mean to.

Ferndale is a nice community, so why slam it or any other burb. Tired of Detroit vilification, gets great hits, but consider the source.

SE MI is a great place to be. great near burbs, good schools, nice people.

Trolls, leave us alone. We can dog out our own issues.

The "average suburban couple" from Troy or Shelby Twp isn't in the target demographic of either Ferndale or Corktown.

    This is absurd thread....

So now we have Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, Royal Oak, most of Troy, and Ferndale in "decline" or "going ghetto" according to DYes....

Not according to DY, just trolls wanting to stir the pot. A strong metro area is highly to be desired. Issues exist of course. Fortunately, intelligent people work for resolution.

Yeah this is a bummer. As indie as Ferndale strives to be, it's nice having a few things that don't keep banker's hours or require snapchat or whatever to figure out when it's open or what's on the menu [[yes, everyone get off my lawn)

Moved to Ferndale thinking it would avoid the RO trap of morphing into an outdoor foodcourt for drunken yuppies, but here we are. Most remaining businesses are highly mobilized against the proposed parking garage development [[laughably dubbed a 'high rise' by the opposition). But at this point I'm almost hoping it happens and their fears come true - only so many haircuts or hangovers I can use in a month.

Smart money for the next 20 years is MidWoodCork Villages, with or without Slow's.

But Clawson, [[Clawson!), and Berkley!, will soon rise and render all those ghettohoods irrelevant. I'm looking at you Melvindale...
