Default Detroit Shot and beer bars

    http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2...r-going-strong

Great article on the every corner bar. Dont think I was ever at Abicks. Being an eastsider, I can name a few, a vanishing breed. The bars not the eastsiders.

Grew up in Poletown, now a Cadillac plant. Delivered newspapers to a few.
Tippin Inn, Ford Service drive and Ellery,
Anna's Ford service drive and Elmwood,
    Melody Inn, Piquette and Mitchell
    Poppy bar, McDougal and Farnsworth
    Nicks, Ferry and Moran

These were from when I was a kid, did not drink beer in these establishments.
Most of my drinking was in Hamtramck
    Mr. Joe's Bar,

I have been to Abick's a few times. It is a truly great old-time corner bar with real atmosphere. A friendly place [[and Manya is as pleasant as portrayed in the article). Highly recommended.

Best shot and beer bar on my side of town - eastside - was Dex Walter's. Great neighborhood bar, "where everyone knows your name"

Dex Walter's now Touch of Class Lounge. Pretty sure of the name. Pretty sure it is closed.

Yeah, Abick's is pretty much 'The Shit'. Manya and her grandson Eric are on my speed-dial!

Great place for darts, plus Grandma Manya will usually always have some type of crockpot fair, particularly in colder weather.

A wonderful, old-school bar that truly is 'all that'.

Enough with the nostalgia. What's a good eastside bar NOW? I liked Your Place Lounge and JY's, but both are closed.

What's left on East Warren and in that area near Harper and Cadieux? The High Noon? First Place? Elam's?

I really miss the Kress Lounge on Michigan.

My new favorite shot and a beer Bar is Flanagans Pub in Wayne. I have had their burgers they will do and pretty much all I ever get is bottles of High Life except when the daughter is with me then we do shots.
Worst thing about this site is that I find too many Bars I wanna hit, Yet I gotta find my way home.

Pop's second home was Henry's Bar on Gratiot. He used to go with some of the neighborhood Dads to the Seven VO bar on Seven Mile.

Ah yes, the Texas Bar. A strange place in a desolate spot. Huge inside too, and usually only two or three people in there.

    Lodgedodger,

I have been to 7 VO bar. Bowled with some of the regulars.
Does the name Alexy ring a bell.

Slick, I'm sorry but I was just a kid. I don't recall Pop mentioning someone named, "Alexy". Sorry, m'dear.

Pop used to order a thing called, "Boombas" at that bar.

    Fury13,

7 VO bar was/is on 7 Mile just East of Schoenner.

A Boomba is just a large draft beer, usually a rounded shape glass.
about the size of a small fish bowl would be OK.

I've heard the term "boomba" used all my life in Detroit for a goblet of beer, particularly on the northeast side and in Hamtramck. I've always wondered if the word has some Polish origin/connection?
