    Default Detroit Potato Chip companies

A friend of mine is looking for information on local Detroit potato chip companies for a project she is working on. If you have any memories, photos or memorabilia you are willing to share, drop me an email at detroittvguy@hotmail.com and I will forward the information.

I remember the old Superior Potato Chip Plant near Myers and Schoolcraft, whose TV ads referred to their product as the "poe-tah-toe" chip because they thought it was, well, superior. Probably the biggest selling brand was New Era, which would actually buy potatoes only from certain Michigan farmers to insure a consistent product. They were bought out by Frito-Lay, which used the same yellow and black packaging with some red detailing. Better Made sold its chips from their small retail outlets and is still in business minus those outlets. Krunchee advertised on DSR buses and were kind of greasy, which I actually liked as a kid. There were about twenty local makers some fifty or more years ago, but these are what I remember.
