"The $148 million American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute officially opened in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood Thursday, marking the beginning of what many hope will be a return of production-related work to a city that has bled manufacturing jobs.

City, state and federal officials and celebrated the 100,000-square-foot center's opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, announcing a new program name for its goal of advancing lightweight materials development: LIFT, for Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow.

The hub was originally supposed to be based in Canton Township and open in May, and Duggan said in July when he approached "his friends at the White House," they said he was too late and it was already headed to the suburbs."
