    Default Detroit Tourism Stats

According to this article [[ http://www.travelpulse.com/news/dest...l-in-2015.html ), which monitors yearly travel info from Hotels.com, Detroit is [[unsurprisingly) not in the top 25 for 2014. However, it ranked as the 28th most visited city in the US, and will fall into the top 25 for 2015- easily. That's amazing!

Times are changing rapidly now. I sat next to father and son bears fans at the thanksgiving game. Nothing usual about that but what is different is they were in for the whole holiday, staying downtown, they hung out for a few days taking in a wings game and hitting up the casinos. Not to long ago the fans that came in from out of town to see the lions and their opponents got gone fast. Now some of these people are hanging around being tourist. It's the same for baseball fans as well, now more are staying downtown sticking around for more than one game sometimes the whole series.

Well based on the attendance figures for Tigers, Lions and Redwings vs. Pistons you could be right, a staduim in suburbia surrounded by 100 acres of parking might not really work well around here ever again.

One could argue about to survive but evolve? YEAH RIGHT!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHA Yeah, LBPism would work really well in Detroit. Oh and malls! And McMansions! No, Detroit should take no lessons from the suburbs. It should take its lessons from Berlin, or Brooklyn, or Portland.

I would like to see how many of the people that make up the total number of vistors were connected with the bankruptcy proceedings. Legal staff from all parties and press to cover the largest municipal bankruptcy in the country probably numbered in the thousands.

Just saying, the folks that don't pay that water bill or the property taxes aren't exactly buying tickets at $25 a seat for hockey, baseball or football

    Park the vehicle, tailgate/eat/snack/drink,
watch the game, hang around after $$$$$$

Tourism means outsiders coming INTO the city for a good time, contributing to the economy.
The fact that people do it, is very encouraging.

Except here you missed the point completely.... they're talking about HOTELS not suburbanites coming down for a game and meal and then going back home.

The biggest draw to the hotels are 1) business travelers, 2) out of towners here on vacataion, and a very distant 3rd) some suburbanites that want a room and either want to enjoy the ambiance of the city before/after a game, or are too sauced up to drive back afterwards and need to sleep it off...

You will find that the group that make up #1 and #2 are the vast majority of the people in the original posters link....

Interesting in light of what was posted about the RenCen via Taubman on another thread about revitalizing downtown Detroit.

Walk around downtown on gameday and you will see many people in visiting team's gear. They aren't local and they're staying somewhere. Why wouldn't they stay at the hotels around the sports venues? This is what's called "tourism", you troll.

I think it is an idiotic idea to build new stuff STRICTLY for """other""" people who don't live here.

Build with the intention of getting local folks to use it, often, openly, repeatedly.
-- THEN when it is such a great venue of stature,
that the word of mouth spreads outside the state,
drawing outsiders in, is it considered a true success, for the local economy.

Via assessing the effects of subsidies for professional sports franchises and facilities
reveals that most evidence goes against sports subsidies.
Subsidies cannot be justified on the grounds of local economic development,
    income growth or job creation.
A survey of economists also reveals a general opposition toward sports subsidies

Taxpayers have to decide how their government will encourage local businesses through tax breaks or direct subsidies. The main thing that sports franchises businesses spend money on is the players.

Having traveled a bit. Most folks kind of regard Michigan as this tucked away Cul de Sac that's just out of the way for them. Not trying to be mean, but it's just what other's have expressed.

I don't think anyone has any illusions of Detroit turning into Orlando. We are just happy that the downtown hotels are doing much better, it's just one piece of the puzzle that makes a city stronger.
