Default A list of every former retail chain location in Detroit

Tonight, I launched a new site where I plan on listing every former location of retail, bank, gas station, hotel and motel chains in Michigan. It's located at https://sites.google.com/site/formermiretailers/.

I would like to know if there's anything you want me to added on my site. Right now, all I have on there is a list of the locations Ames had in Michigan, which is very little.

Perhaps it would be easier to list what's still open.

I think the purpose of the OP's link is to archive places that once were, likely for nostalgia and record-keeping.

Not just in the city of Detroit like most of the locations posted here so far...anywhere in the state of Michigan.

Why dwell on what is no longer. I love history and preservation but mostly these threads seem morbid.

Personally I believe that " things change and we with time", all this seems to be Detroit/Michigan are dead ducks. If you believe that I want to sell you a bridge

I don't see these type of threads as morbid. In fact, threads like this can be very educational.

It's not so much about focusing on what's no longer there, but rather documenting and being able to picture the evolution of the environment we live in, given how rapidly people, places and things can change in life.

Besides the good or bad memories of yesteryear that can be brought up, this knowledge can also help us in collectively determining where we went wrong with our past mistakes and what we can do to prevent from repeating the same mistakes going forward.

How deep is this list going to go? You could eat up a lot of bandwidth just listing chain shoe stores [[Mary Jane and National Shoes, Thom McCann, Bakers, Chandlers, Father & Son to name a few) that don't exsist anymore.......

Nice idea mtburb. Out of curiosity and as a test I dumped your Farmer Jack locations into a Google Map using 'fate' as the label. Here is the result.

Lists do nothing, just document things gone. I adore when posters talk about new movements and ventures.

Sorry didn't mean to sound short. Lists simply mean nothing. Memories of establishments gone, I find of value. It is the human element that make what is gone still have value.

You missed Sears at Gratiot and Van Dyke.

Whatever the purpose of this exercise, it seems to me that trying to list every name brand gas station or chain supermarket that has ever existed in a city the size and age of Detroit is biting off a huge amount to chew, and may even be termed a fool's errand.

I came across this old Sanders candy box that showed locations in the lid.
I though this might be from the 50s. Any other thoughts?

A Sanders sign imprint can still be seen on the building at the SW corner of Gratiot and Pfent.

I think it closed sometime around the late 1980s/early 1990s?

Sears - southeast corner of Mack and Moross
Hughes, Hatcher & Suffrin - immediately south of that Sears, connected by a covered walkway

Cunningham Drugs - northwest corner of Gratiot and 7 Mile

Lipson Super Market - north side of E. 7 Mile between Waltham and Goulburn [[I think it may have later become a Great Scott).

Bur-Lers Five & Dime - north side of E. 7 Mile between Goulburn and Westphalia [[I think there was an Oaza Bakery next door)

Such sweet memories; There was a Cunninghams at Mack and 7 too. My Dad took me there for my first ever chocolate soda. My folks were quite frugal and I had to promise my Dad not to tell Mom. Its stories not lists. Huges Hatcher and Sufrin [[sorry bad spelling) 7/mack. My Dad got all his shoes and hats there because a church member worked there on commission.

    Stories count not stupid lists
