Default Detroit already seeing benefits from new arena. Will host 2018 1st/2nd round NCAA MBB

These are events that would either pass up on michigan and go to Indy/Chicago. Or would go to the palace and not generate much excitement. Hotels, restaurants, and retail will all begin to see major boosts from hosting these events downtown.

Because everyone knows that hosting an amateur basketball game is real economic development. And somehow we had previously hosted the tournament multiple times, before spending hundreds of millions on now a third arena for the region.

Other cities selected for the tournament, and also sure to share in the coming wellspring of riches, are Wichita, Boise, Greensboro and Tulsa. We're truly in rare company.

You do realize that Detroit recently hosted the Final Four, right?

you do realize we haven't hosted the opening rounds, or the sweet sixteen games [[which are now reserved for hockey/basketball arenas) since 1994? sure we had the final four, we also had the super bowl.. those aren't coming back to ford field in quite a long time. Ford field is ineligible to host any of the other tourney games. new detroit arena is.

I would like to say that I predicted this long ago and there were a few, I believe, here who were skeptical that the NCAA would buck the Palace.

I believe the logic was that Ford Field would be appropriate for the Final Four, but inappropriate for the first and second rounds.

So to get the 1st and 2nd rounds Detroit needed [[and is getting) a new arena.

And, of course, there are more 1st and 2nd round venues then Final Four so Detroit comes up soon in the rotation.

Events like these will supply the impetus for the new hotel at the corner of Woodward/Fisher.

Fans coming from out of town would flock to that hotel. Convenient, places to eat, etc. etc. [[this locale would be great for sports and entertainment and not geared toward business travelers).

If tourism is so meanless then why are millions being spent to improve Cobo Center. Why does every convention and tourism bureau[[including ours) work to bring these events to their city?

This venue will host many more events than just hockey and NCAA basketball. You could place a reasonable bet on a significant number of concerts, NCAA hockey, convention-type stuff [[like Promise Keepers or things like that), etc.

There are those who like hosting events in suburban areas [[Rosemont Horizon, for those familiar with Chicago) and those who like the urban areas [[United Center). This is even better than the average urban venue because it's really a part of downtown [[unlike many venues, which are a little off the beaten path). Being able to capture that segment is undoubtedly a positive for Detroit and the region.

Referring to NCAA tournament games as "an amateur basketball game" really shows how desperate this individual is to put a negative spin on ANY positive news. I find that quite sad. Anything that brings out of state dollars is good for the city, region, and state. Increased tourism and travel is great for diversifying the economy.

    I agree with you.

"March Madness" is something which is virtually incomparable in college or pro sports.

It isn't comparable to baseball's Post Season or the NBA or NHL playoffs, etc. etc.

It is to college basketball what the playoffs are to the NFL but covers many, many more teams.

It has some of the qualities of what we saw this year in the World Cup.

In a certain respect, being a true single elimination tourney it is truly [[almost) unique [[the NFL is also a single elimination tourney too but only has a limited number of teams in the playoffs.).

Of course another hotel downtown is necessary because the current ones have 85% occupancy rates consistently such as the Book Cadillac & Fort Shelby as an example.

What are you talking about? The Palace just hosted the 2nd and 3rd rounds in 2013, and Ford Field had the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight in 2008.

i meant the city of detroit not auburn hills. and my fault forgot about '08 regionals. but those are no longer allowed at football stadiums, so unless they wanted to play them at the Joe, the city of Detroit would not be allowed to host these events [[1st/2nd rounds, sweet 16, elite 8). Technically could still host a final four at ford field but i don't see that happening for a while.
