Default Bringing a group from Chicago, suggestions needed.

    DetYes,

Next weekend I am taking a group of 12 from Chicago to the Hawks @ Wings game. We are staying downtown at the crowne plaza by JLA.

I travel from Chicago for about 10 Wings games per yer but rarely stay around Detroit after the game. Everyone else I travel with will be in Detroit for the first or second time.

I want to show everyone a good time downtown [[within walking/ DPM distance of the hotel before and after the game.

What are suggestions for places to go after the game for a Friday night in Detroit? Preferably places that are fun and will leave tourists with a positive perception of Detroit.

    Thanks in advance

Actually the people I'm taking probably know an equal amount about Chicago as they do Detroit...Suburban folk

Grab drinks on top of the Ren Cen. Or at Cliff Bells, or the Park Bar. If you want to stun them with architecture, take them to the lobby of the Guardian Building [[not sure what time the lobby closes). Also the lobby of the Compuware building is pretty neat. If the weather is cooperating, then try walking the riverwalk from Hart Plaza heading east towards the bridge to Belle Isle. Punch Bowl Social is opening in about a month unfortunately, but it sounds like it'd be a fun place to hang out.

I don't mean to be redundant [[as I made this suggestion in another thread), but dinner at Greektown followed by a nightcap at the Old Shillahleh would make for a nice night.

The Well, The Baltimore, Grand Trunk Pub, Cafe De Mongo, Uber to Corktown and check out sugar house, Two James distillery, Mercury Bar, or take an Uber to Midtown and visit Cass Cafe, Third Street or any of the other millions of cool spots.

Friday night, Coach Insignia has a "reverse happy hour" after 9:00, and that's always a great thing to show people. Walk down the river front from JLA over that way. Check out Foran's Grand Trunk, which has a great MI beer selection. Jacoby's [[German bar) nearby is also one of my favorites. If you're into dives, make a stop at Tommy's near the Joe, and ask them to show you the basement. Stop at Lafayette for a late night coney to cap off the night.

If you're looking for a bit more party/club atmosphere, head over to Greektown. The Well, Baltimore, and Firebird have dancing with no cover. Old Shillelagh, Delux, Exodus, Niki's, and Level Two have dancing with cover.

To show them around, take a single loop around the people mover to show the various areas of downtown. Take them to the Compuware Building and Campus Martius, and the Guardian Building lobby.

The Guardian Building arcade is locked up at night, but the lobby is open at all hours, and they don't mind visitors. You can still view the arcade from the top of the staircase.

If sticking around to Saturday morning, they do tours at 11am [[and 1 pm) at the Guardian [[and the Fisher Building, as well). Could also check out Detroit Experience Factory tours. They'll be running their $10 bus tour [[11 a.m.) and free walking tour downtown [[2 p.m.) on Saturday.

If they're Hawks fans take them to Zug Island before the game and drop them off at the Packard after the game.

    Go Wings!

Wrong hotel. If I wanted to impress Chicago friends I'd have them stay at Cadillac Westin. Or in the burbs at the Townsend. And I'd get them very liquored up. Sorry to say, there's not much you can do to show off Detroit to people coming from a city that's about 100x better than current Detroit. A lot of booze will give them a chance to forget how dire it was.

Dinner in Detroit: El Barzon, few rounds of margaritas will make night fun. Dinner in Grosse Pointe: Marais. Dinner in burbs: Torino, Ferndale [[or Rugby Grille if you put them up at the Townsend). De Mongo, Green Dot, and Sugar House should be pretty full for boozing. Maybe night cap with a coney from Lafayette or shawarma at Bucharest. Stroll over to Astro or Great Lakes for an espresso the morning they checkout.

If the Sky Bar is still open, that is always a beautiful view of the City, plus a run on the people mover, then finally walking around the area.

As boring as it sounds it's probably best to take them to Cheli's or another good hockey bar like Andrew's On The Corner for dinner and after the game hit the casino and do the coney challenge at Lafayette and American. Showing people from Chicago architecture in Detroit would be like taking people from Southern California to Belle Isle's Beach. I know it doesn't make much sense logistically because they are staying within walking distance but out of towners get a kick out of riding over to The Joe in one of the bus shuttle services provided by a place like Andrew's. People get rowdy and have fun on those things.
