    Default Hamtramck High School/Football Stadium

This photo was in the Historical Detroit Area Architecture Facebook group a week ago or so.

My grandfather played football for the high school back in the 1940s. I was wondering if anyone else had any memories of the school, or photos of the high school or football field from back then.

... looking at the shadows, boy he sure had a big flash bulb!

Is that the school that was on Hewitt & Joseph Campau? Where would Joseph Campau be in that picture?

Here's what that area looks like today from the air.

That school, according to a few that commented on the post in the group, is Playfair Elementary School or Pilsudski School, apparently torn down in the 60s.

And Joseph Campau would be one giant block west.

The original high school was on Wyandotte St/Hewitt St. on the other side of Joseph Campau.

Default The stadium is under consideration as a new home for the Detroit City Football Club.

The team currently plays at Cass Tech but they have outgrown the seating capacity there.

That's Keyworth Stadium, which was not only the home of Hamtramck High football, but was also the home field of Wayne State [[and before that Wayne U.) football for many years. It's on the south end of Hamtramck just east of Gallagher [[and a block and half east of Joseph Campau) and can be entered from the north off of Roosevelt. The small building that replaced the school at the north end of the field is the Hamtramck Public Schools Administration Building.

A few blocks to the south and west is another interesting Hamtramck sports landmark. On Dan St. are the remaining stands of the Hamtramck Stadium [[also known as Roesink Stadium) baseball field, which was once the home of the Detroit Stars of the Negro leagues.
