Compared to other viruses, ebola is relatively low on the contagion scale. Its high mortality rate is what makes it so terrifying.

What is just as disturbing is how this guy was allowed to travel here. Liberia has announced that he will be prosecuted from lying at airport exit by saying he did not have contact with ebola victims when he had treated a relative.

It makes one wonder if he realized he was likely infected, perhaps the person he was treating transferred fluids to him, and decided to flee to the USA where he knew he would get a much higher level of treatment.

Well put. Mr. Duncan lied to Liberian authorities to leave Liberia claiming he had not had contact with any ebola victims.

"Two days after he was sent home from a Dallas hospital, the man who is the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States was seen vomiting on the ground outside an apartment complex as he was bundled into an ambulance.
“His whole family was screaming. He got outside and he was throwing up all over the place,” resident Mesud Osmanovic, 21, said on Wednesday, describing the chaotic scene before the man was admitted to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday where he is in serious condition."
    -Yahoo News

As of last night, the plastic bag full of vomit, sweat, etc. was still in the apartment with Mr. Duncan's fiance, ex-wife, or whatever she is, her [[their?) son, and two adult nephews. No one has taken it away because they can't find people to do the work. A couple of county officials paid a visit without protective gear. They are also now quarantined. Food was finally provided by a guy in shorts. The vomit outside on the sidewalk was addressed by a guy with a power washer and broom and no protective gear. It flowed down the gutter somewhere. The ambulance used to drive Mr. Duncan to the hospital was infected but was used for an additional 48 hours before any of the subsequent ambulance crews were notified.

"Before I left, I had asked an expert how much virus is in each droplet of body fluid. At time of death, when the viral load is highest, he told me, it’s probably 500,000 to 1 million particles. And how much virus would it take to become infected? Somewhere between one and 10 particles, he said." -Washington Post

I'm thinking this could all be done better and that we will be lucky if this doesn't spread given the third world response. If this is the best public health agencies can do with only one ebola victim to contain, imagine the mess a larger outbreak could create. This is too much like Brownie doing a "heck of a job" in New Orleans.

Not totally related but I'm reading all sorts of contradictions about the people involved. Who are they? How did they get here? What sort of visas were they given? The last time Obama tried to pass amnesty, we were introduced to the Tsarnaev family and the $100,000 of welfare provided them. Now this. So I am wondering why Mr. Duncan and Louise are here. What makes them, or the senior Tsarnaevs, so desirable that they were admitted to this country?

When you've got a ditherer for a "leader" the buck passing never stops and eventually extends all the way down the ranks and nobody is responsible for anything; especially the ditherer. Instead of managing a situation to minimize problems he only reacts to them after they've happened, or not at all, in case he offends somebody. The people at the CDC are faceless in this cock up and the Hospital nurse is the one that made the mistake in the Liberian "Ebolee" case.

I think Obama has a secret plan to introduce Ebola in several cities then declare national martial law, kick down all our doors, take all our guns, declare sharia law and force us all to convert to Islam. C'mon folks not everything is about Obama.

According to CDC 18 people in Dallas, TX. are in quarantine. One-hundred people might be exposed to the Ebola virus and they are asymptomatic. 28 Days later, they are doomed! My prayers to them. May God save them all! May God save this free nation.

Here's a study with rhesus monkeys which shows that they can be infected with the ebola virus in a laboratory setting by inhaling airborne aerosol droplets containing the virus.

Whether the ebola virus can be naturally transmitted to other monkeys via airborne droplets is not yet proven [[nor does this mean that humans can be similarly infected).

    _____________________________________________

Lethal experimental infections of rhesus monkeys by aerosolized Ebola virus.

    Int J Exp Pathol. 1995; 76[[4):227-36 [[ISSN: 0959-9673)

    Johnson E; Jaax N; White J; Jahrling P
US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Frederick, Maryland 21702-5011, USA.

The potential of aerogenic infection by Ebola virus was established by using a head-only exposure aerosol system. Virus-containing droplets of 0.8-1.2 microns were generated and administered into the respiratory tract of rhesus monkeys via inhalation. Inhalation of viral doses as low as 400 plaque-forming units of virus caused a rapidly fatal disease in 4-5 days. The illness was clinically identical to that reported for parenteral virus inoculation, except for the occurrence of subcutaneous and venipuncture site bleeding and serosanguineous nasal discharge. Immunocytochemistry revealed cell-associated Ebola virus antigens present in airway epithelium, alveolar pneumocytes, and macrophages in the lung and pulmonary lymph nodes; extracellular antigen was present on mucosal surfaces of the nose, oropharynx and airways. Aggregates of characteristic filamentous virus were present within type I pneumocytes, macrophages, and air spaces of the lung by electron microscopy. Demonstration of fatal aerosol transmission of this virus in monkeys reinforces the importance of taking appropriate precautions to prevent its potential aerosol transmission to humans.

The Onion weighs in: How To Protect Yourself Against Ebola
This week saw the first confirmed case of Ebola virus within the United States, the latest development in an outbreak that has already claimed over 3,000 lives. Here are some ways you can protect yourself against this deadly disease:
    • Boil all bodily fluids before consumption.
    • Regularly examine your DNA under an electron microscope for any indication that Ebola has attached itself to your cell membranes.
    • Recognize the symptoms of Ebola, which include fever, chills, and developing symptoms too late to do anything about them.
    • Cover the nose and mouth of Ebola patients when they sneeze to avoid spreading germs.
    • Avoid eating bat soup, which is actually pretty sound advice whether there’s an ongoing Ebola outbreak or not.
    • Ebola can only be spread once patients are symptomatic, so if you believe you’ve been exposed, get all your errands and public trips out of the way before your symptoms start showing.
    • Be sure to stay up to date on developments by signing up for the official CDC phone tree.
    • Try being born one of the 15 percent of rural Gabonese citizens with natural immunity to the virus.
    • Give billions of dollars to pharmaceutical companies.
    • If you see a suspicious-looking filamentous virus particle roughly one micron in length, stay away.
    • Continue following lifelong plan of avoiding Dallas, TX at all costs.

The Dallas,TX. family of the Ebola patient are in private quarantine for 21 days. After the get the symptoms, they are doomed to die! Unless they get treated with Z- Mapp. [[ if it works for them.)

28 days later we will see if Ebola takes over the United States. Then the mega quarantine begins where no one gets in or out of their homes!

Have you all see the movie OUTBREAK and CONTAGION! This is the real deal!

    Ebola has escaped containment.

Finally, in-depth news from our side of the pond [[chronological coverage including retrospective references):

    Out of control

How the world’s health organizations failed to stop the Ebola disaster

[[From article) This is an open-ended crisis involving a microscopic threat on the move. This week came the unsettling news that the Ebola epidemic has now reached across the Atlantic Ocean to a hospital in Texas, where a Liberian man has tested positive for the virus.

So how did the situation get so horribly out of control?

The virus easily outran the plodding response.

When you think of the planned response to this situation, like the response to Katrina, things are so ill thought out. No one plans for waste handling on even a small scale, let alone as massive as even one hundred cases. No one plans for food and water and hazmat cleanup. It's all so neatly cut and dried as if everyone is actually a robot performing a set, predictable task.

Also, in the Texas case, we are learning how privatization is hampering the ability to deal with responsible waste cleanup and food delivery. Who can we find that we can trust to do this right? OK, who can we find to do this right? Well, OK, who can we find to do this at all. ANYONE?

Can we learn fast enough to deal with any health emergency?

Concerning that disappearing post, sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between them and a cut and paste from The Onion.

Anyway, here's a study providing evidence that some individuals can be infected with the Ebola virus and never develop symptoms [[asymptomatic) or become ill.

Presumably they do not infect others, except through blood-borne transmission.

Human asymptomatic Ebola infection and strong inflammatory response.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus is one of the most virulent pathogens, killing a very high proportion of patients within 5-7 days. Two outbreaks of fulminating haemorrhagic fever occurred in northern Gabon in 1996, with a 70% case-fatality rate. During both outbreaks we identified some individuals in direct contact with sick patients who never developed symptoms. We aimed to determine whether these individuals were indeed infected with Ebola virus, and how they maintained asymptomatic status. METHODS: Blood was collected from 24 close contacts of symptomatic patients. These asymptomatic individuals were sampled 2, 3, or 4 times during a 1-month period after the first exposure to symptomatic patients. Serum samples were analysed for the presence of Ebola antigens, virus-specific IgM and IgG [[by ELISA and western blot), and different cytokines and chemokines. RNA was extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and reverse transcriptase-PCR assays were done to amplify RNA of Ebola virus. PCR products were then sequenced. FINDINGS: 11 of 24 asymptomatic individuals developed both IgM and IgG responses to Ebola antigens, indicating viral infection. Western-blot analysis showed that IgG responses were directed to nucleoprotein and viral protein of 40 kDa. The glycoprotein and viral protein of 24 kDa genes showed no nucleotide differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Asymptomatic individuals had a strong inflammatory response characterised by high circulating concentrations of cytokines and chemokines. INTERPRETATION: This study showed that asymptomatic, replicative Ebola infection can and does occur in human beings. The lack of genetic differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals suggest that asymptomatic Ebola infection did not result from viral mutations. Elucidation of the factors related to the genesis of the strong inflammatory response occurring early during the infectious process in these asymptomatic individuals could increase our understanding of the disease.

Ebola viruses can have the ability like other viruses to mutate! Once Ebola mutates. Making a serum or a cure will millions of years away. But that time 6.9 billion people on Earth will die! Only 100 million people will have develop anti-bodies against Ebola. They will be God's chosen people to rule the cleansed Earth.

Earth is sick and tired of Man whining about their problems. So viruses were evolved to stabilize his exploding population.

While we cannot stop Ebola entering America with total certainty we should refuse entry to ANYONE carrying a passport of the affected countries and make them understand they are not welcome - including Americans who are stupid enough to visit there and put us all at risk. We need leadership not the legions of placating officials passing the buck down to the lower ranks to do their jobs and everything will be OK. Keeping them out is a solution that will work better.

A Spanish female doctor in Spain has contracted Ebola from an infected patient. She was wearing a special spacesuit to keep the pathogen away but somehow she didn't clean herself. Now she's doomed to die in 28 days!

The family of the Nigerian Doctor [[Patient Zero) has come in contact with the Ebola Virus and now in private quarantine. In 28 days if they got the virus, [[ which its possible) they are doomed to die!

The Nigerian American Doctor [[Patient Zero) is in critical condition in a Texas Hospital with the full blown Ebola Virus. After 28 days, He has renal kidney failure. The Ebola Virus has turn parts of his organs and tissues into liquid. He's doomed to die!

Now we must see if 50 to 100 Americans and foreigners who come in the Africa, to Brussels, Belgium to Washington, D.C. to Dallas, TX. who came in contract with patient zero with Ebola. In 28 days they will have the sickness and be doomed to die!

My prayers towards them. Jesus Christ will cure them, no Z-Mapp or snake oil experimental medicines can cure those who are full blown to Ebola. Man shall not mess with God's creatures that they don't understand. Let will be our lesson. This is our punishment! for our sins!

Survivors of an Ebola Apocalypse, should such a thing happen, will be just as susceptible the virus as before they went into isolation. With so few left to attack, and no systems left for isolation and care, Ebola will rampage through the populace like measles and smallpox did to the East Coast Natives here in the 1600s. The survivors will also be toast.
