Default "Big announcement regarding Detroit transportation"

The link shows pictures of bus stops [[specifically the 53 bus).

Any guesses? i'm assuming it has to do with the 26 mill they got for 50 new buses.

$26M for 50 buses? My math may be off, but that sounds like roughly $520K per bus. Do buses generally run that much? Or is that price tag including other things like personnel to service and maintenance, etc?

Transit busses run between $300,000 and $600,000 each depending on size and options. The Chicago Transit Authority recently spent $600k per bus for their new ones. There's an interesting article about purchase and operating costs of busses here:

Thanks. That number sounds exorbitant, but I'll educate myself by reading the article you posted.

Is this the big announcement? Crain's reporting Detroit will get $32M for 50 new buses. Hybrid and clean diesel engines. $26M is coming from the feds and the rest is from the state.

Isn't the current fleet something like 250? A 20% increase in buses could make a huge difference.

According to that Crain article, Detroit has 421 but only 180 are ever running on a daily basis. 158 buses out of the total fleet are more than 10 years old. Duggan needs atleast 225 to keep the routes on time.

the decrepit buses need to be sold/scrapped immediately. Why keep them around at all?

The time has arrived when "pigs fly" is the announcement. Detroit has risen from its ashes.
