Is this Target vetting Detroit for one or just some insignificant blogger vetting Detroit for a City Target. If the latter is true than this is just useless news that could be been left out for I and others had been suggesting the same thing for a couple of years. I still think that either New Center One in midtown or the former Kresge building downtown would be good locations for a City Target. One of the strip malls that is on Jefferson had spaces but the owners prefer to have dollar stores, ghetto furniture stores that sell hub caps and rims, beauty supply stores, and the like

Why should forumers rejoice? It's not like Target announced they are building a store in the city. I'm sure lots of retailers have "vetted" the city of Detroit before. I'd prefer to see a unique mix of locally owned smaller retail that is actually PATRONIZED enough to turn a profit.

@mindfield. It's a joke. People have been saying a city target is coming to the greater downtown area for years, now that it is an actual possibility [[because yes,, the company is actually looking at Detroit as an option) it's pretty funny we can seriously discuss it.

On a related note, this "Detroit Homecoming" going on the next couple days looks terrific. I believe Crain's is the official host...they are bringing in tons of local folks who moved away and are movers and shakers at various companies around the country. For a few days they are basically experiencing tons of cool Detroit stuff - seeing the "rebirth" - with folks like Gov. Snyder, Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg...and all that speaking. Hopefully this brings some new investment to the city.

Gilberttown Detroit is not getting a City Target. It's just rumors and innuendos coming from some lady who works for Target. It's a dream but not a reality. Gilberttown Detroit have to be packed with people attracted to retail hubs first. The a City Target can come. Gilberttown Detroit is no booming business district like Downtown Chicago or New York City. Gilberttown Detroit is filled with restaurants, bars and pop-art retail. We have a long way to go from its 9 to 5 regional recovery phase to up all night business hub.

CITY TARGET is a relatively new concept for Target Corp., the first store opening in the old Carson, Pirie, Scott and Co. Chicago landmark in July, 2012. There has been speculation over the last two years about a downtown Detroit store, fueled by the Whole Foods store. This is not the first contact---Target has been lookng at downtown over the last 4 years. Adapting one of the old retail spaces is possible, as would be new construction. The old Monroe/Bates/Randolph/Farmer would be ideal but Bedrock supposedly dispelled that. The old S. S. Kresge buildings at Woodward and State would be a great location...multi floor isn't out of the ordinary for Target...many of their regular stores are multi floor as is the Chicago Loop store. City Target does not carry a full line of products, but is custom tailored to the local market and the concept is not limited to "downtown" but classified as urban store locations and includes groceries. These stores are not open 24 hours. In two years the number of downtown workers/residents will have increased as will the new housing units on the books for downtown/rivertown/midtown, tech town and the New Center. Planning for stores like this don't happen overnight---Whole Foods viewed Detroit as a probable 3 years before the deal was finally cut. If Gilbert/Bedrock want Target, it will happen. Remember, Bedrock has long term control over downtown. The opening of the M1 rail project and the retail openings are meant to coincide. We have to finally start thinking that there are reasons for developments like this to go forward, not dredge up reasons why development won't happen. it's a new era.

I want a Target store to finally be in the city. They should also come with a Starbuck's.

The last time I checked [[things could have changed), there are 3 Starbucks total within Detroit's city limits:

    -One in MGM Grand Casino
    -One on Mack and Woodward
    -One in the Millender Center

So while there are technically "multiple Starbucks" throughout the city, that's certainly not very many for town with supposedly 713,000 residents and a downtown/midtown worker population between 50,000 and 150,000. These store locations are also relatively inconvenient for most folks as far as their access and proximity.

The one in Millender Center has been a Tim Hortons for at least 5 years.

There is also one at the Marriot RenCen.

I hate their Coffee BTW nasty stuff, bitter burned tasting.

I understand your point of view but you need to take a few things into consideration. The downtown appeals to a large base of people. Local residents, young and older working professionals, suburban tourists, and out of state tourists. The key word is "mixed", things that appeal to several demographics. The city needs reinhabited more than anything else. Give people some of the creature comforts from home in hopes of luring them to live in the taxbase.

Buying local is awesome but can be very time consuming, especially in fragmented Detroit. Not everyone has the time for that when shopping. Detroit is light years away from having congruent "retail" districts to satisfy all the needs that a Target could. Like it or not, it's a reality. If the future of Detroit is the ultimate in "Organic" urban re-development, this Target would be weeded out anyways...

Target would not be weeded out for Target has more basic needs to satisfy many

Did Meijer buy out Target, or vice-versa, while we weren't paying attention?

I don't see how there is enough foot traffic to support a Target yet.

Yes, there has been a gigantic influx of people into the downtown, but you can still walk down Woodward or Michigan Ave at times and be the only soul on the street.

I think a regular, multi-level Target would be able to attract folks from other parts of the city who find it inconvenient to trek out to Harper Woods/Southfield/Dearborn/Allen Park.

There would just need to be plenty of free parking available.

    Why not?

Would you rather a big box Target with a huge surface parking lot be plopped in the middle of downtown.
