    =========================
"The Michigan Economic Development Corporation [[MEDC)’s Michigan Strategic Fund Board today approved a series of projects that aim to bring more housing to the heart of Detroit.

Orleans Landing Project, located at the corner of Franklin and Orleans streets in Detroit, is a planned mix of retail and residential space. When completed, it will have 20 new buildings and 278 housing units.
Jack Hambene, senior vice president of urban development company McCormack Baron Salazar, said the firm focuses on urban development nationwide.
“For the last 20 years we’ve tried to do projects in Detroit, but it seems like the stars are aligned to make this one happen,” Hambene said.
The project will be on the Riverwalk, and apartments will be marketed toward those seeking an active urban lifestyle and people who work downtown.
The Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved $6.5 million in local tax capture, approved a $7.6 Michigan Community Revitalization equity support and reauthorized a $7 million Michigan Business Tax Credit.
The development is expected to create 39 full-time jobs and generate a total capital investment of $61 million.
MEDC Community Assistance Team Specialist Stacy Esbrook said the preference for Detroit development is mixed-use buildings.
“There’s a huge demand for residential in the Downtown and Midtown area but those residents want amenities,” Esbrook said.......

Wow, looks like they are serious. This could be sweet...

Glad to see this project progressing, as its been talked about for some time. The same article mentions approvals for Du Charme Place and the El Moore. Good all around

Sizable empty tracts getting infilled, and a nice historic structure being saved.

Currently, there are still a handful of derelict structures in that zone, including behind Bob Maxey's secondary lot, and a whole bunch of building debris directly behind the drive-through lot of the Detroit Metropolitan credit union off Woodbridge. Will they finally get knocked down and cleared out?

I miss the sandwiches and live music at Franklin and Orleans!
Just an old guy's mini rant.

Sounds like you've got the blues.

A good reminder that with clean government and crime being controlled and a little positive attitude, amazing things can happen.

Detroit has made great strides in downtown and midtown, and I think a lot of people have hope because we have seen some other areas like Corktown starting to become a destination for residents and businesses.

But lets not kid ourselves. Detroit may not be circling the toilet bowl anymore and POSSIBLY has a chance to pull itself out of this bankruptcy mess [[and for the better), but crime is still out of control [[despite all of those rosy statistics that are lauded), the school system is a joke, and the neighborhoods [[save for a few small communities) are a complete disaster.

We are making positive steps, there's no doubt about it. Clearing blight, having a functional, un-corrupt governing body, and getting crime under control are going to go a long way in the next 5 years. But anyone celebrating at this point needs to take a long look in the mirror and realize that there is a shit ton of work that needs to be accomplished.

There's about 800 steps that need to be taken to get this city right and prosperous, and were on about 12 right now. Maybe by the time I'm an old man and have grandkids, we will look back on this time and not recognize it because of the progress we've made. I hope....

Back to Orleans landing-- has any earth been moved on site yet? IIRC groundbreaking was slated for end of summer.

I think another poster had mentioned in a separate thread that dirt was being moved around right now.

Great! Orleans Landing Project would be better than living on Chicago's Gold Coast Area.

It's already even more desirable than Manhattan or Paris. Billionaire oligarchs are lining up to live in opulence behind the Maxey Ford parking lot.

Elaine Stritch moved back to Bham.....to die, so that area must be the most vibrant.

    Let's stay on task, folks.

Good to hear about the dirt movement.

If they've really started work, why was there no actual announcement? The last thing I heard was that they were "planning" on groundbreaking by Labor Day, but I don't see anything that says they've truly started. Just the speculation that dirt being moved around is official work on this project.

You seem to think that I'm some self-styled "defender" of Birmingham. I just live here, I don't defend it or wear my address as a form of personal identity.

Birmingham is an absolute snooze, and full of pretentious old bores. I would probably die too if forced to move from Manhattan to Birmingham.

I moved from Manhattan to Detroit. This is where the action is.

    That was her mistake =)

You could always move to more desirable Manhattan or Paris.

It has been a while since I’ve posted. I was looking for more information on the Orleans Landing project and I stumbled across some renderings that I hadn’t seen before. Pics are from the HamiltonAnderson website. http://www.hamilton-anderson.com/orleans-landing.html

Should we expect construction this spring?

The first three pics look good; the last one looks like more of what's planned in Midtown and The Ellington.

It does, but I actually like the fact that it adds more diversity in design to the project.
