Default Hipsters, vampires and Detroit ruin porn

I see that the movie "Only Lovers Left Alive" is having its US release today.

This film project was awarded a $365,904 incentive by the state of Michigan Film Office back in 2012.

After reading this review, I think I will take a pass on watching what some of my tax dollars bought, particularly since it's currently playing only in New York City and Los Angeles.

The New York Times review doesn't make it sound much more interesting from a Detroit perspective. It sounds like Jarmusch has mostly used Detroit and its blight as a stage set for his somewhat passe [[in an '80s hip kind of way) story of disaffected literary vampires. All with little or no interaction with, or interest in, the actual city, its actual people, or what has actually occurred here. Still, I have liked a few of his movies in the past, so I'll probably go see it if it shows anywhere near here, despite the reviews.

Yes well... You cant expect every other movie shot in Detroit to be a documentary about something Detroit. But Detroit is certainly ahead of most cities as a powerful mythmaking environment. it is underrepresented, but I would be happier if a local genius managed to tie up a solid Detroit biopic.

Default Jim Jarmusch's Detroit in His Latest Film

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch's recently released to DVD/Blu-Ray, "Only Lovers Left Alive," was, as many probably already know, was partially shot in Detroit. Even though I am a huge fan of Jarmusch, I did not know this. Shame on me. When I saw this film for sale recently, I nabbed a copy. Since the story revolves around vampires, all the Detroit shots were shown at night. Of course the Packard Plant made a cameo appearance.

I have to thank the DIA for introducing me to Jarmusch os many years ago when his film "Stranger Than Paradise" was showing at the DFT one Friday night so many years ago. And his films since have been so satisfying in a very offbeat way. Normally I would have known about the release of this film but with the demise of Thomas Video...I'm still in mourning as a dedicated and devoted customer who saw so many great films over the decades, titles one would never find on the shelves of Blockbuster or Hollywood Video stores.

In any event, I enjoyed this latest offering of Jarmusch, and even more so having sport trying to ID the areas of the city.

Anybody know where that main house is located?

Jarmusch films have a certain air about them and I think his use of Detroit as a backstage was appropriate for the film. His films have a certain flavor that many would not find palatable.

wow, I didn't know about this either!

Jarmusch is a true master. In so many of his films, almost every frame would be an amazing photograph [[that is especially true of Dead Man)

Down By Law is one of my favorite films of all time. I'm not a big fan of the vampire genre, but I will have to pick this up.

Curbed had a write-up on it a while back. It is on Alfred Street.
