Default Any Payphones Left In Detroit

I know two people who don't have or want mobile phones. I wonder what they would do in an emergency while out - or if they just needed a ride or had a flat tire or something. It reminds me that I have no idea where a public payphone might be in Downtown Detroit.

    Are there any?

Went to Point Pelee on Saturday to escape the Dream Cruise and it's astounding how many pay phones and neighborhood mailboxes Canada still has.

Not exactly up-to-date as I think the several listed at that ballpark at Mich/Trumbull may be gone.

Not sure how up to date that list is, it still has Frank's Nursery on it. CA Muer dba Chuck and Harold's Palm Beach, 1548 Porter? When was that? I don't recall that place at all. St. John had already closed another Detroit hospital, Saratoga Hospital, in 1998. Wow! That is one trouble with the Internet, things that are great get posted and abandoned. Somebody needs to update this project!

Yes - I did see that site and saw that it is dead.

    So, anyone know of any?

If you do happen to find one, they are usually broken and destroyed.

Okay - so no outside payphones. Maybe one in a building?

At the risk of hijacking this thread, the explosions of cell phones and the loss of pay phones has had one beautiful result in the Las Vegas casinos I visit. No longer do I hear constant overhead pages of "phone call for Harry Smith, Mr. Harry Smith, please." In fact I don't recall hearing one for the last ten years or so. [[Newbies....I live in Las Vegas.)

You can find them at all the stables so when you stable your horse you can phone your hotel so they know you have arrived in town.

So the next question is are there any stables left in Detroit?

Well, you could say that for the Wyandotte pages on that same site-for example, all phone numbers still begin with 313-that area code has been non-existent in Wyandotte proper since late 1997! In addition, it still has Hungarian Kitchen [[completely unrelated to the still-operating Hungarian Rhapsody in Southgate)-that has been torn down for an Aldi and a strip mall with an AAA office and an AT&T store. Plus, it still lists the Mac's store as being on Pine Street-ain't it on Eureka now? In addition, it still lists Watkin's Hamburgers-that also has been torn down, but for a medical office, it still lists 2000 Biddle as a Total station, it still has Revco [[which, like Arbor Drugs, was acquired and rebranded by CVS) and it lists an Oak Street address for Roosevelt High School-it has always been on Eureka.

But I did find something amusing on there-Cheers at 116 Oak Street-I didn't know that bar had a wider reach across the US from Boston!

Great picture collection Django! Even longer gone is the telephone booth. Have any of those in your archives?

Sure there is! Right next to pay phones and blacksmith shops.

In the Murphy Hall of Justice for folks that need to call for a ride since cell phones aren't allowed for those summoned to jury duty.

Lowell, I think the payphone booths were all just about gone by the time I started shooting the cities almost 30 years ago. Dammit Im not that old man

I do wish I had a pic of the red English cast iron phone booth we stored in our warehouse in Oakland. That thing weighed a ton literally, vey cool. Someone had brought it over from London.

IMO, have your friends get a small, basic, buy-the-minutes, cell phone, and keep it in their purse or pocket. Shit happens, as they say, and as we've just witnessed, it isn't worth it pounding on someone's door @ 4:30 A.M.

We have one in our home in the sitting room. In one of its many incarnations our home was a boarding house. Somewhere along the way the pay per use function was dismantled. It worked fine but a few years back we eliminated our land line so now it is just a cute whimsey.
