Of course things were fine the year I decided not to go Glad everything went smoothly and the event went as planned with no issues! Seeing as how things went down this year, I will probably give it a shot next year.

The rules all seem like common sense given the issues in the past. It's great to hear that everything went well.

150 juveniles were arrested due to curfew. Parents of those juveniles were fined $50. One person was arrested and two escorted off Belle Isle for disorderly conduct. There seemed to be no other major incidents. Pretty good relative to prior years.

The big story of this year's fireworks is how few people attended. I am guessing it was for a mix of reasons, weather uncertainty, media hyper-ventilation over a recent river walk brawl and knock-game allegations [although the most recent was in Ferndale], bag checks and other restrictions on entering Hart and the traffic blockages everywhere coming and going.

As you can see in the following picture taken at 7:35 there is, relatively speaking, nobody there. Counting those out of sight, I can't imagine even 5,000 being there. In past years Hart Plaza would have been packed like sardines by this time with everybody set up, waiting and partying.

On the downtown streets, there were cops EVERYWHERE, on corners, cruising, standing around in knots chatting, on the people mover. One would think it was a state of siege. All that was missing were people.

I know they like to trumpet that a million people watch the fireworks, but they must be talking about watching it on TV. [And, really, one in five people in metro-Detroit-Windsor are watching??] Someone guffawed that if there was a million half of them had to be law enforcement. Just too much hassle it seems and a collective, "Why bother" was sighed.

So having a lot of cops is a bad thing.... All the felons probably stayed home. It would be nice if the whole city was loaded with cops like that everyday so people can enjoy going out without the threat of ghetto thugs attacking people.

That's kind of how I felt. I got caught in the stampede-ish thing three[[?) years ago when some buffoon shot himself in the leg by the Renaissance Center, and again last year by Woodward and Jefferson. This year was "The weather sucks and my prior experiences sucked worse, should I even bother?", and the decision was an easy no. But like I said, they really showed they were able to do it right, and the media showed they are still good as ever at scaring people from enjoying their lives, so I will most likely give it a shot next year.

Mind you, next year the media will probably say "Kids are going to play the ACID GAME, where they get high off of ILLEGAL NARCOTIC ACID and throw BOTTLES OF ACID in your INNOCENT CHILD'S FACE!!", so that should keep a few people home too.
