Default Visiting in August; what's the best [[cheap) hotel?

I will be in Detroit August30-31 [[labor day wkend) and need to start booking hotel for the night.
I haven't kept up with the city. The last time I stayed it was at Robert's Walk on Jefferson.
But I would like to stay in midtown around WSU if possible, I think the hotels are cheaper, right?
Or somewhere along the Woodward Corridor that's safe. Please send recos to
wrightinchicago at yahoo dot com Thanks.

I bid $55/night on Priceline for August 27 and 28, 2011, and got the Hilton Garden Inn downtown. It was well worth the price.

I have done the 4 star secret room rate Downtown several times through Travelocity. I've gotten the Book Cadillac a few times. The Atheneum too. Greektown Casino has a pretty nice room with a view also. Good luck...

I'll try a few myself. I'll be in Detroit in July and over Labor Day weekend.

I'll drop a few coins into the Detroit and S.E. MI economies.

    Kidding. Don't stay there.

Hotel Yorba or the Normandie are amazing options!

Viking Motel gets bad reviews - shady types hanging around, working girls, etc. Book Cadillac, Athenium or the MGM Casino/Hotel will all charge around $275 to $300 per night, not the price-point the OP is looking for.

Not sure about pricing, what about DoubleTree Fort Shelby? If the new Aloft Hotel is open by then, that's probably what you're looking for. For some reason I think they will end up missing their July opening date though.

Check out Hostel Detroit. They have rates of $30ish to $60ish per night.

Wherever you stay, you picked a great weekend. Be sure to check out the Detroit Jazz Festival. Friendly crowd, good live music.

LOL, The Viking. I think he was joking Night Timer. Thats an old whore and drugs motel which I think is long gone but not sure.

I was wrong, the Viking is still open. I just called there number. Unless they've made some major changes I wouldn't recommend it.

Now I want to go photograph this old haunt. Im surprised I didnt know they were still open, I live fairly close but never really get over to Grand River much except to take the shortcut from MLK over to Trumbull when I want to go to Corktown.

Django, yes, in my own search for Detroit hotels, I noticed that the Viking is still open. they advertise everywhere, but it's probably best avoided.

Not many good reviews of the Viking to be seen here:

Just a note of precaution: Nowadays, when searching for cheap hotels, it's a good idea to be aware of the bedbug problem. There are many online resources with trip reports and advice for avoiding the problem.

    Here's just a few:

We used to put up evicted families at the Viking, and I saw it just the other day, looking exactly the same.
