Default Mel Farr's Back on Television

I saw him advertising for his son's [[or grandson's?) Auto Finance company yesterday. He had on the infamous suit and red cape as well.

I don't believe the commercial has been uploaded on the internet, but I saw it on TV One between 6pm and 7pm, if anyone wants to keep an eye out for it again.

This got me to thinking about what ever happened to Michael Farr and his legal troubles, so I decided to look it up.

Ex-NFL Player To Pay $3.6M To Settle SEC Lawsuit

”A Michigan federal judge on Friday approved a settlement that will require former NFL receiver Michael Farr to pay $3.6 million in penalties to put to rest allegations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that he helped a disgraced businessman and investment adviser steal from a trio of pension funds. [Detroit GRS, Detroit P&R and Pontiac GRS]

Under the terms of the deal, U.S. District Judge Denise Page Hood ordered Farr to pay back $2.32 million in illegal profits, plus $277,793 in prejudgment interest. He will also owe the government $1 million in civil penalties.

Detroit-based investment adviser Roy Dixon Jr. and his company, Onyx Capital Advisors LLC, will also pay back $3.11 million in profits and pay the same amount in civil penalties, according to court documents.

Despite never having managed a private equity fund before, Dixon allegedly bribed former Detroit City Treasurer Jeffrey Beasley to obtain approval to obtain money from the city's general pension fund, a city police and fire pension fund and the general pension fund for the nearby city of Pontiac. He has also been indicted on federal fraud and embezzlement charges related to the scheme, which are currently pending.

Dixon was accused of taking approximately $2.1 million in excess management fees from the fund, while he and Farr siphoned off another $1 million from money invested in a trio of companies owned by Farr. Of the $25 million Dixon in pension dollars was entrusted to manage, aboutAl 80 percent was devoted to Farr's properties, authorities said.

Dixon also lied to the pension funds about the amount of management fees his firm received and sent a forged letter that misrepresented Onyx's principals, the SEC said.

Although Dixon had never managed a private equity fund before, he allegedly told the pension funds he would work closely with a friend who had substantial experience. He later allegedly sent a forged letter stating that the experienced manager was on board at Onyx.

Meanwhile, the three pension funds have written off a combined $23.8 million in other “investments” they made with Dixon. His trial on those charges is due to start later this month.

Not seen anything like that. Sounds like a snazzed up payday loan place.

Finish the rhyme on this ad jingle.

    Mel Farr, ***** ****

IIRC he reigned as largest revenue-producing dealership for a while.

The googie ruins of his empire.

I love all the old commercial jingles. Mmmmm, Deitricht Furs... Get on the right track... We're father and son...

I loved the old Mel Farr commercials. He spoke so quickly, I don't think I ever fully understood what he said.

My favorite all-time Detroit commercial has to be THE Highland Appliance ad. "Fifty watts per channel, babycakes."
