Great Lakes Maritime Academy - Spring Cruise Floats by Detroit

For the past week or so the State of Michigan has been plying the waters of the Straits of Detroit. Looking it up I discovered that it is the largest training ship of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy whose land location is in Traverse City on its spring cruise. How sweet is that for getting an education?




In this view students can be seen and on the upper deck are what I assume bikes they use when they get shore time, like when they were tied up at the Port of Detroit the other day. The bulk cargo carrier, the Cason J Callaway, passes by the State of Michigan with the Windsor Art Museum in the background.

Each deck cadet is required to have a certain number of "river trips" to get their pilotage endorsements. Each engine cadet is required to log a certain number of hours of time as well. The ship spends time doing runs up and down the Detroit/St. Clair River system, as well as the St. Marys River system. This is very helpful in teaching the cadets different facets of ship operation, [[painting, painting and more painting, lol) as well as some line handling, ship handling and learning the rivers. And yes, that is what the bikes are for :-)

after they do this during the first couple of years, they usually end up on a laker as an intern for the summer to get actual working conditions indoctrination...

i almost was one...
