Default Information on the North End

I was wondering if anybody has any information on this neighborhood. What was it like back in the day?. Are there any old photos of what it used to be? Did it feed off of New Center? Is New Center the way to revitalize it? Any information would be appreciated. Any old photos would be appreciated, Thank You

Generally, folks who live in the North End have lived there a long time. Good housing stock. A few newcomers have moved in to stake a claim, but they get along well with the locals. Scott Hocking moved into a space on Oakland about a decade ago, and now that's the Fortress Detroit art space.

In the old days it was serviced by a streetcar line. One of the last holdouts in the neighborhood is the Apex Bar, where you kind of have to be a local to be buzzed in.

Here's something I posted a couple of years ago on another thread about the North End:

In the era of Detroit's not-so-distant past when de-facto housing segregation was practiced, that area was home to many of Detroit's black professional class. Streets such as Chandler, Melbourne, Alger, King, and Holbrook had substantial homes that were occupied and impeccably maintained by the residents who were teachers, lawyers, doctors, businessmen and the like. For example, the Pelham family lived on Holbrook. Even after housing patterns changed and professional black families were able to move to the West Side, a number of those families aged in place even as the neighborhood started to change around them and was no longer seen as a desirable place to live by Detroit's elite.

Designed by Nettleton & Kahn. 99 Chandler built in 1900 North End Detroit, MI.

According to the Detroit Free Press the building permit was issued for this house and one other sibling approximately one month before their 3 siblings at 996 Burns, 1022 and 1042 Seminole in Indian Village. N&K may have just repackaged the design for the Cook Farm Company.

The is one other possible sibling but the house has been extensively altered.

I doubt the North End fed off of the New Center. The fabulous homes shown above by p69rrhi, were all built in the 1890's and 1900's. However, the GM Headquarters was built in 1923, the Fisher Building in 1928, the New Center Building in 1931. So it appears this neighborhood was pretty much built-out and established by the time GM decided to built in that area.
