Default Post beautiful pictures of real, everday Detroit!

Inspired by the banner images on this message board, I thought it'd be fun if we created a collection of pictures of the true Detroit. Y'know, the not glamorous skyline, parks, or inspired street art, but the Detroit we drive through day in and day out as we go about our small, insignificant lives. Numb to our daily environment, the world around too often goes unnoticed and unappreciated. Let's take a second to recognize the world around us.

When I lived in Eastpointe, I was very happy to see this:

Demolished for the following functional marvel:

But fret not! They put up a cool little historical marker to show you how interesting the area used to be. Also, check out the classical styling on the windows of the new Rite Aid, dreamed up by one of our sensitive modern architects.

    Wrong buildings and intersections.

The 1st photo is at Stephens and Gratiot, while the Rite Aid is at 9 Mile and Gratiot. The building the corner of Stephens and Gratiot is still there.

Rite Aid/Perry's Drug Store was previously inside East Brooke Commons, where Five Guys is now.

Sorry, I couldn't find any suitable recent photos, so I'm settling for this photo I took of Oak Street in Wyandotte in April 1989. Take a look at all those shiny Chrysler K-Cars with Superior Blue plates...

Well, when I was down there today, a 1980's car was behind me, so I took opportunity for this shot. Basically, this is to show you how little has changed at that intersection...if you visited that intersection in 1989 and went back there today, you will notice that the traffic lights and street lights are exactly the same. Yes, I was in the area back then and remember those details.

In addition to nearly every car in that picture not yet existing in 1989, I remember a storefront that existed in 1989, but has since been torn down for a new house [[which isn't visible in that picture).

These are from winter 2011. It had been a pretty gray winter.

Nice thread. Would like to see more of it. I'd assume there are some great photographers on this forum. Great to see current random photos. A picture is worth...

We participated in a snap Detroit project, sponsored by the DIA a few years back. everyone was given a camera. The resulting project was on display and very revealing. My only regret was not taking a picture of a liquor store on Jeff that has a palm tree [[fake) in front of it.

Totally disrespectful, but we like to call her "Jo Mamma" whenever we see her signs anywhere.
