If this were simply a drug robbery, why the need to torture the victims before killing them?

I can't help but think that if the races of the perps/victims were reversed, this would be a national story about a hate crime. Imagine three black men are found tortured, murdered, and burned to death in a house in a predominately white area and four white teens were arrested for the crime. That shit would be instantly declared a hate crime and would be all over the news.
