Default Detroit: quality of life for children nation's worst

http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2...text|FRONTPAGE child premature births, child death rates, especially for those under 1 years old, are at very high levels.
This is not just a police or criminal justice
problem,” Gray said. “This is a public health problem [[that requires) a
coordinated response from the public health agencies, the organized health
infrastructure, from the philanthropic community, the educational system.

“Virtually everything that touches our children and
youth in some way has to play a role. It really has to be a community effort to
address this crisis for our kids.”

Kristen McDonald, vice president of program and policy
at The Skillman Foundation, which focuses on improving the futures of Detroit
children, said “If kids aren’t safe, nothing else matters.”

“The homicide is horrific, but we actually have to get
to this comprehensive place where children are just plain safe, not only safe
from homicide but where they’re safe from any sort of attack or any violence
when they’re trying to get to school or after-school programs.”

Wealth is the number one thing that needs to be addressed to fix Detroit's problems.

Forget all your political battles, and get in line making Detroit competitive.

Attacking the rich doesn't make you rich. Bringing down others doesn't raise you up.

We have a great opportunity right now with the world behind us. If we take the opportunity, we can bring wealth to Detroit.

Roughly on topic, did anyone else see Bill Gates on Charlie Rose the other day? He argued that Foreign Aid has done wonders in creating the environment where many countries, including in Africa, are now able to support themselves, create wealth, and handle their own health and poverty issues with no need for outside help. Nigeria was one case. The world is getting better, through hard work in this case by the 1%. When asked about the Oxfam pitch that the 85 richest people in the world have as much wealth as a few billion of the rest, Gates said that his part of the 1% is dedicated to helping the world -- and that Buffett and others are also on board. I was very impressed by him, and what his foundation has done. Remember when everyone was screaming at him because he did NOT support contribute back to society. Now he's leading the charge, and making a difference in the world.

Long way around to saying this. While most countries are now headed towards financial, economic health, there are a few that are not. North Korea, DRC among them. Why? Leadership that fights against things, not for things. Detroit can have success.

The Census Bureau's 2012 American Community Survey reported that 58
Percent of Detroit children under age 18 lived in impoverished households.
Nationally, 23 percent of children lived in impoverished households.
Poverty among children gets very little attention these days.
